I recently downloaded "Oceans Apart" from eMusic and, like so many others, I really loved the songs but was put off by how distorted it sounds. I noticed that the Lo-Max records store has a "new master" version for sale at http://www.resonancestore.com/lomaxrecor ds/music/a548a03e-e1f8-102b-bac5 -001d09f1418c/Oceans%20Apart%20%28the%20 new%20master%29.html. Unfortunately, I live in the United States and it would be pretty expensive for me to order this, especially since I've already bought the album in another format. Does anyone know if this is available in the U.S.? Is there an online store where I can just get a digital version of the new master?

Thanks,
Alex

Thanks for the Link Alex, I now have the new pressing. Not that expensive really.
I now have 2 copies of 'Oceans Apart' to go with my 5 copies of 'Liberty Belle'.

I think that "New Master" was from shortly after the original issue of the album. The output level was reduced -2.0dB or something and it's a little bit better, but not dramatically so. If the album has been remastered since then I'd definitely be interested.

Yeproc was sending out Lo-Max replacement discs to those who asked at the time, but I'm sure they're all gone now.

Paul B... how does the new master sound to you? Is this a second remastered version or the same tweaked version I've been living with for several years?

Guy, I'm assuming its the original Lo-Max re-issue, I remember reading a post that said that the new 'master' had the Uncut and Mojo review sticker on it, and that's what the picture is of on the Lo Max site.
I was on the board at the time but didn't get motivated enough to send in my original disk.

I'll send my thoughts once the disk has landed.

Well, at the very least you'll have an opportunity to rediscover the album and that's certainly worth the effort.

Did YepRoc finally poney up and offer to replace their bad mix versions with Lo-Max new masters? I had one each of the original YepRoc and Lo-Max distorted versions and sent my Lo-Max one back to Lo-Max for a new master five years ago. I still have my original distorted YepRoc.

I got my replacement from Yeproc/Red Eye Distribution, but it was a Lo-Max disc.

It sounded better, but it wasn't night and day.

I’ve had my new master for a few months now, unfortunately my original copy is in a box 1000k’s away so I haven’t been able to do a direct comparison.

But judging from my gut reaction, I prefer the new version. Firstly, Oceans apart is my least favourite album. I couldn’t see what the fuss was about when the record was released. Yes, it has a few nice songs, but I found, and still find the production incredible dense. I always think of it a their Phil Spector album, and as a result didn’t listen to it much.

So its probably me getting lazy or my ears getting jaded, but I found myself letting the album go through to the end on a number of plays. I still think it sounds loud and thick, but perhaps the pressing is not as loud and thick?

Still today it appears unbelievable that such a bad recording was initially sent to the shops...
The last record by the GB... (sic)!
