I read last night in David's book that fans refer to The Go-Betweens as The Gobs I have never heard anyone refer to them as The Gobs! Still enjoying the book very much though. | ||

I remember it from the 80's. It was definately used as term of endearment although I never liked it. It certainly follows in the tradition of pet names being bestowed on a band by their close fans (especially the gig goers). Almost all Australian bands who have a bit of a following get one. Quite often the names are uncomplementry. Aka-daka, Hunners; there must be a million others. | ||

Yeah, people who didn't like Pseudo Echo used to call them 'Shudo', a reference to the idea that their fans were so dumb, they wouldn't really know how to say 'Pseudo' (or perhaps just a dig at the pretentiousness of the name itself). | ||

The Mats for The Replacements is my favourite. Not that I have a clue how the name came about. The only guess I can make is that it comes from place mats, but that's kind of silly. Any clue anyone? | ||

Dunno Paddy. It occured to me last night that GoBs is probably pronounced Go-Bees, not Gobs. Go-Bees is fine by me, although I'm in the habit of using the initials when writting or the full name when speaking. | ||

I got a bootleg live CD of the GoBs from the infamous German drummer tour entitled "Return of the Go Bees." That name stuck for me. I take it Aka Daka is ACDC. Who is "Hunners?" | ||

Hunters and Collectors. They engaged with this early in the piece on I think the cover of the live album The Way to Go Out where one or more of them is standing outside a turkish restaurant in Cleveland St Sydney called 'Hunnas'. Other diminutives: Barnesy (Jimmy Barnes) Farnesy (John Farnham) etc. Cold Chisel became just 'Chisel'. Skyhooks became just 'Hooks'. So creative. |
