If you're in Ireland, I'm on Marian Finucane's program at 11.30am today. If you're not in Ireland you can listen here http://www.rte.ie/radio1/

I should stop telling people I'm supposed to be on the radio, because as soon as I do the piece gets canned because something vastly more important has turned up. Oh well.

I realize my above comment looked somewhat sarcastic (and no WAY does that ever happen!). Actually, I really was interested what got you bumped, PC.

I didn't think you did, Padraig - I know you, of all people, can glean the real meaning beneath my imprecise writing! I generally avoid emoticons, but there are times - especially in a forum - where they'd come in handy. Cheers, pal.

Padraig, can you please give us auslanders a primer on the Kevin Rudd/Julia Gillard situation? I think it was Nick Bryant (BBC) who wrote an unflattering piece on Rudd a couple weeks ago suggesting that Rudd is only barely a Laborite in terms of his background and personal tendencies. And I think it was Bryant who said that Rudd had been keeping Ms. Gillard out of the sunshine while she was deputy. But I seem to remember reading somewhere a year or two ago that Ms. Gillard was super ambitious, at that time suggesting that she'd be a bit of a viper in Rudd's breast.

I'm dark on her and so is every teacher in Australia. She dudded us on the Naplan tests and I for one will never forgive her for that. My boss talked to her at a union meeting with her in Canberra a couple of months ago and said she's superambitious and absolutely uncompromising. Despite her pro-union background, she was going to fine individual teachers $50,000 if there was any protest action. A pox on her. I hope we get a hung parliamnet with the balance of power with the Greens.

I agree Geoff. Most staff at my school hate her guts. The way she pushed the Naplan tests on us and the way they have been used to rank schools etc are reprehensible.

I am a unionist and obviously dont wont a return to Work Choices, but the way a group of Right wing unelected union officilas can decide to sack an elected Prime Minister is a very scary thought. I wont be voting Labor again and will be looking to independent progressives to vote for.

Reading Padraig's articles, it looks like Rudd overreached with the mining tax. He should have proposed something much more gradual.

Re Gillard, politics is always the art of the possible. It might turn out to be true that she's done something to rescue the country from another long stretch of Liberal control. I'll read up on the Naplan tests; I've no idea what they are.
