There is a programme worth watching on BBC4 tonight at 10pm.

The Great Hunger
The Songs of Shane MacGowan

A portrait of Pogue singer, Shane MacGowan, charting his remarkable journey from north London punk outsider to Ireland's most respected balladeer.

Contributing their versions of MacGowan's songs are Nick Cave, Sinead O'Connor, Christy Moore and Ronnie Drew. Strong language. [S]

Part of BBC FOUR's Folk Britannia Season.

Fri 17 Feb, 22:00-23:00 60mins Stereo

Maybe you Yanks and Aussies can pick it up on cable/sattelite?

Spence, as much as I love Shane I had never heard Gbarielle by the Nips. Your version sounds like it takes the riff from Louie Louie as the basis of the song, I take it the Nips version did the same? Liked the first track, i'm a sucker for pedal steel.
The influences section was interesting to say the least - Dickie Davies, Bertie Vogts :-) - why them?
ps good luck with the BA's tonight

Shane was on the Late Late Show (oldest chat show in the world !) last fri - singing the Irish Rover with Ronnie Drew - it was really sobering (no pun intended) to see him, hadn't seen him for a while..

Kev, thanks, yeah it was a bit Louie! Andy who's in the Wineebago's used to hang around with Shane and the Pogues in early eighties, so that was the main reason for our homage.
Yeah, we're recording the new album soon and there's gonna be pedal steel all over it, mainly for our love of Gram Parsons, but new boys like Wilco use it to great effect too.
Betie as I'm Scottish, and Dickie, well, he's Dickie ain't he!?
Ciao!
