The magic of the ipod has thrown up ‘Rumour and Sigh’ by Richard Thompson once again. Had forgotten how good this was – a great 3 song opener if ever there was one and ‘Vincent Black Lightening 1952’ is always a joy to hear. Any Thompson fans here care to recommend some of his other albums?

Gareth, where to start? For people who are mainly into RT because of "Rumor and Sigh," I'd recommend "Amnesia" over his other Mitchell Froom-produced albums. "The Old Kit Bag" from a few years ago is excellent, better than any of his solo albums since "R & S." Going further back in his catalog, try "Hand of Kindness."

And if you haven't heard Richard and Linda Thompson's albums, "Shoot Out the Lights," "Pour Down Like Silver," and "I Want to See the Bright Lights Tonight" are the essentials.

Yeah, sorry. There was still unfinished business with Pete concerning the Plug Uglies on that one and I forgot this one.

Last night I listened to the Blue Aeroplanes' "friendloverplane." On its second and a half listening, I'd say about one half of the tracks were quite good.

The Eels-Blinking Lights, had this for ages but some how felt intimidated by its 2 cd disc status, but going at it in stages I've been really impressed and can't wait to play it again.I've always felt Mark Everett was trying to be a bit too much like Tom Waits (vocally ) but he's a real talent.
Also listened againto BYBO and really enjoyed it much more now than when it first came out, I flet the songs had little drama or change in pace and a bit too jangly but I was wrong.

Glad you like it Randy, I was touring with them a lot around that period, 86-88 and a lot of the stuff on friendloverplane were studio outtakes etc, but some hidden gems like Warhols 15, Etiquette and veils of colour. There's a lot of the experimental stuff too. A year later though they had changed into something very very different.

Spence - I think Marion were actually from Macclesfield but I'm sure they're who you were thinking of. I actually only have that album on cassette which is obviously a pain. Record shops in Germany aren't exactly flooded with 'This World and Body' on CD. That album unfortunately came out in early 1996 when if you weren't poppy clever-clever scenesters like Oasis, Blur or Pulp you didn't really fit. If Marion had released 'This World and Body' last year I'm sure they'd be huge.

But unfortunately they didn't. So the best guitar album released by any British band in 1995 / 1996 remains a mostly ignored classic...a dubious honour indeed.

Graham,
Re: Marion. I never thought about it like that before but I agree about the Marion album. It could have been huge like the Snow Patrol Album was two years ago. Funny how this album has been mentioned a few times on this board - they were never huge. I remember about 3 people picked it for one of their top albums of all time (including me). I saw them at Reading 1996 and they were very good live. One day I will have to listen to their follow up (and last album) The Program (produced by Johnny Marr). I think it's cool that ex-Marion guitarist/keyboard player Phil Cunningham is now more or less a permanent member of New Order.

Peter, I saw Guillemots last month in London. I thought they were so, so. Nice to hear and see female double bass player. It didn't help that the venue was jam packed and the two support bands were amongst the worst I have ever heard. I'd like to hear the Guillemots album before I pass judgement.

I saw Marion live at the Feile festival in Cork in 1995 and thought they were great. Stone Roses, Orbital and Tricky were also great that weekend. And Nick Cave came on during Kylie's set to play Where The Wild Roses Grow; but I missed it as I was definitely not watching Ms Minogue.

Matt - 'The Program' is very good although I think Marion were already in the mire at that point (singer Jaime Harding's drug problems). If I recall, it got good reviews but was promptly delayed for 12 months due to contractual problems which didn't help. Unfortunately they didn't get as far as a 3rd album...

Pádraig I saw a lot of Feile on TV - couldn't make it in person. My abiding memory is of Dustin interviewing Kylie. And liking Sleeper. God help me!

Spence - Whipping Boy have reformed recently. I saw them in Ireland over Christmas and they were brilliant as ever. I'd love to hear a new album. 'Heartworm' was a ferociously brilliant album - the best Irish album of all time in my opinion.

Flatlanders is on CD, Jerry. I bought it online a while back (can't remember where from though). Rounder Records reissued it.

The Diamond album is dividing people. I love it; the kitsch has been stripped away and what is left is a strong set of songs and performances. In places it's quite stark and intimate but in others melodic and joyous. The bloke writes a cracking tune. Gets better with each listen too.

Yeah Marion were name dropped by MORRISSEY and they looked like Suede circa 'Coming Up'. Its all coming back to me now. Whipping Boy I think were so understated, it was the wrong time for their simplicity, and them in general.
Graham, look forward to their new release one day perhaps?

I think all three of Whipping Boys Albums are brilliant..yes I'm not an expert on Irish music, but in my humble opinion 'Heartworm' is the best Irish album of all time followed by any record by The Frank And Walters and then 'On The Turn' by Kerbdog!

I can see a simplistic, down to earth honesty in Whipping Boy's lyrics but I would think the singer Ferghal McKee is anything but simplistic. Just listen to the lyrics of 'A Natural' they aren't autobiographical but they distrubed me for a very long time. I've been on a Whipping Boy fan mailing list for about five years. Apparently McKee was a cook in a hospital in Dublin after a string of appearances in various Irish bands before Whipping Boy reformed.

yeah you are right, I like the simplistic arrangements of the music, more than the simplistic approach of the singer...I felt that their music was understated, there were no real structures fighting for attention just an anaesthetic drone that sucked you in, no real guitar solos or owt...

Currently listening to the new "Comes With A Smile" Magazine cover CD. Up to the usual high standards with rare tracks from Gravenhurst, The New Pornographers, rivulets and Spoon.
Shame its the final issue... Back issues with CDs are often selling on E-Bay for over £30 each so hopefully this'll be an investment.

Just dug out Heartworm by The Whipping Boy, just curious to see what it sounded like after all these years. I remember playing it a lot when it came out, and even though its probably been 10 yrs since I heard it the songs sounded reasonably familiar. However, I thought it sounded pretty weak to be honest, one track (We dont need nobody else) even sounded like Blue Aeroplanes. Sorry, but dont think I will be playing this again

Listening to

Various - More Pressure, Straight to the Head
Grandaddy - Whatever happened to the Fambly Cat
Liars - Drums not Dead
Teardrop Explodes - Kilimanjaro
Drive By Truckers - A blessing and a curse

Whipping Boy are playing Vicar Street in Dublin on April 29th for anyone who may be interested. From recent interviews they are just playing these comeback shows but have no plans at the moment to record again.
http://www.gamerseurope.com/whippingboy/downloads.htm
The above links to all their recorded output except Heartworm, including rarities and live stuff for people who like weak blue aeroplanes!!!
Try the self titled last album from 2000 Kevin, its more lo-fi than Heartworm as it was recorded on a shoestring in comparison, has some great songs on it including my favourite "Ghosts Of Elvis" which was one of the highlights of their Christmas Show.

Padraig,
I love Not drowning waving and only really rediscovered them after hearing the RAN sampler in "the Australian" in January. Tabaran is one of my fave albums...Call across the Highlands is SOOOO atmospheric. You don't happen to have "Another Pond" and the fabulous "Little Desert" on C.D. by the way??? I guess David Bridie couldn't winge too if they were burnt since they are deleted items now. I have both on L.P. of course but don't have a record player anymore.

Havent heard the album enough to make a judgement Jerry. Early impressions are that its tougher sounding, although Gold Lion is a brave opener given that it shows the bands gentler side. I'll give it a good listen later on and let you know what I think

Hi Geoff, no, I don't have thoese albums. I only have one NDW album. I think they have a best of compilation though, which I must get. (A double CD as far as I recall). I got that RAN sampler with The Oz too and it also put me in mind of them!

I spent a lot of yesterday listening to my 4-year-old calling Central Coast Mariners fans "losers" after Sydney beat them in the A-League final! That's my girl! I knew taking her along was a good idea.
