Production editor (ie sub-editor) on Britain's biggest selling science fiction magazine. I also write freelance reviews for Cycling Plus magazine. Both are part of the Future Publishing empire... Quite frankly, though, after ten years here I'm in need of a change. Any magazine work going in Australia, he says hopefully...? I work in Bath, UK, (home of The Korgis/Tears for Fears) live in Trowbridge (a pleasant 12-mile bike ride along the canal towpath away). (I first saw the GBs at Glastonbury in, I think, 1986. Later GBs gigs include Warwick University, the Venue Dee Why, Australia, and various Robert Forster/Grant McLennan solo gigs, as well as their gig together at the Jazz Cafe, Camden...). | ||

Interesting, Mr Withers. I too am a prod ed, in the mighty world of Haymarket, owned by Michael Heseltine. The title covers the charity and voluntary sector. It's in Hammersmith, but I live in Wimbledon. There are no pleasant tow path bike rides for me, but I did run along the river to Barnes this lunchtime. And got soaked. And then had to go outside again in a downpour and stand around thanks to a fire drill. Pah! | ||

All you lot are so creative so sorry to be practical. But I'm a GP in Preston. Spent 10 years in London whilst training and moved to Sheffield then Leeds before residing in this glorious town. I suppose I always felt my favourite music eminated from the north ( apart form a few Australian bands).Fortunately un-beknown to my patients I can peruse the go-bertweens message board between patients.Its a great antithesis between listening to the stresses of everyday living and illness. | ||

I don't believe it--I think we're honing in on the Go-Betweens demographic (besides wanky college students, that is). I am a publishing lifer, and currently am a production editor (in duty, anyway, my title is "project editor") for Sasquatch Books in Seattle. We do all sorts of nonfiction titles, including a few music titles. I've been lucky in the last year to work with Nic Harcourt of KCRW/Morning Becomes Eclectic on his book "Music Lust" and on a book by former EMP curator Pete Blecha (the guy who bought Clapton's "Layla" guitar for $500K for Paul Allen's museum). Not to pat myself on the back, but Harcourt's original manuscript had a chapter on Australian bands, but no mention of the Go-Betweens. I badgered him to add a paragraph on the group, and he did. He was a fan (he lived in Australia in the '80s), but just forgot to include them. Nic, by the way, is an extremely nice guy--it was a pleasure working with him, and pretty much the highlight of my publishing career. | ||

Kuba - they are both class acts and have helped immensely in what looks to be a certain championship win this season for Celtic. Only criticism of Boruc is he has lost a few goals while coming for cross balls at corners. Magic has scored lots of vital goals, not least the one which beat Rangers at Ibrox - I think this goal effectively won us the championship- are there any decent Polish left backs that you know of?  | ||

Like Kevin, in the constantly thrusting (oo-er missus) world of IT. And too old for it now, as I fail to be excited by the next big thing. Hey Kevin, I was working in Stirling (public sector) before quitting the auld country for the patisserie, cheese and sunshine of the Dordogne in SW France. Before getting a contract back in IT in France, I worked as a hotel porter, looked after an art gallery, helped restore a 16C house and looked after a friend's black pigs from time to time. Fell for the G-Bs in Glasgow as a student, at the time that I bought everything as it came out on Postcard Records. Although it was really 'Before Hollywood' that knocked me over: still their best album, it all fits together so well, sounds so timeless... | ||

Graham - your transcription is a hit! That had to be "Ci±gle pada", a song by a guitar pop group Czerwone Gitary (Red Guitars) which was massively popular in Eastern Europe in 60s/70s. Not much Polish music to recommend, but if you're much into post-punk teritory, you should like Klaus Mitffoch, Lech Janerka and Siekiera. Myslovitz is a fine brit-rock band. Plus, Scianka and Lenny Valentino for those who enjoy more experimental rock. Kevin - yes, I saw that Boruc mistake against Dunfermline, unfortunately he did almost the same last week in an international game against the United States. But he's a class player and will certainly improve on that element as well. Unfortunately we don't have any solid left backs - but isn't Mark Wilson a promising player at that position? | ||

I'm still working on forgiving RF for his comment about Dostoevsky readers; I've been told repeatedly that I look like Vladimir Lenin. Kuba, your entry reminds me of a couple of totally enjoyable anthos I have of 60s vintage East European rock inaptly named "Surfbeat Behind the Iron Curtain Vols 1 & 2." I'm taking them to work for a listen. I remember being very impressed by Romania's Sincron and just generally enjoying the whole lot. | ||

The bands you name as influences on your myspace blog are a good clue to how you guys sound, i could particularly detect traces of go-betweens, felt, love, aztec camera, microdisney and orange juice. Camino vista's intro sounds like something from Before Hollywood, and as we all know thats a good thing, also great solo to end the song! How long have you been going? kevin - thanks so much for the kind words! on the accusation, that's wade on vocals. he's by far the better singer of the two of us, which is why he actually sings on the majority of the songs. i only sing on 3 songs. and i'd like to keep it that way! this current incarnation has been in existence for nearly a year, so it's a relatively new band i guess, but it's been tons of fun. i'm really lucky to have found these guys, as they are all great. and in the color photo, i'm actually the one in the green polyester shirt. or better yet, i'm the one in the third photo, standing there playing guitar (blurry electric 12-string). | ||

Hi Pádraig - yep May 13 marked on my calendar. Hopefully both teams are still in contention for the semi-finals by then (and hopefully Tana Umanga recovered from his knee injury). I seem to remember Pat Nevin being on the cover of the NME once on the strength of his music tastes (he stood out from most footballers by NOT listing Lionel Ritchie and Chris de Burgh as his favourite acts). An interesting guy and wonderfully skilful player who didn't quite fulfill his early promise. | ||

'Didn't quite fulfill his early promise'! As a Chelsea fan of 35 years standing, I have to say Pat is my second favourite Blues player of all time, after Zola. And that says a lot given the players the club has had in recent years. Ok, ok, I declare an interest. I interviewed him for London Student magazine in the early 80s, then again for the Chelsea Independent fanzine in the late 80s, then again for the club's own publications several times over the past 15 years or so, and he's a top top top bloke. When I saw him most recently, late last year, I urged him to get the latest GBs disk - rather sheepishly he told me he'd been djing with Grant at a club a few days before. Peter, you have beaten me to it – in my top three Osgood at 1, Zola at 3 – Nevin is at 2 not just for his football but for his stance against the racists in the Bridge crowd. As well as the NME cover I recall a Melody Maker review of a clunking album by a well known Scottish indie turned pomp rock band that referenced Nevin and his team mates by comparing the older and newer material of said band to the team and its players. Also wasn’t there an all girl group with a name/single called something like “Pat Nevin’s Eyes” ? Stephen, it’s a small world, commiserations on the Albion’s season, but hope for the future with their fine youth side, as for Leeds next season could be very interesting !! | ||

Mark. Poor old Ossie was a bit before my time - I remember him vaguely from his not so great second spell, but his heyday coincided with my infanthood, really. I think Pat Nevin's Eyes was by The Tractors, but it would probably be hard to come by these days. He's also big mates with the Cocteaus - and whatshername (Liz?) from the Cocteaus has been involved with the forthcoming Scott Walker lp. Wheels within wheels. I agree with you about Pat's stance on racism - the late 70s and early 80s were dismal all round on that score. The fanzine I helped to found took a zero-tolerance stance on the issue, and we got plenty of stick for it, but - it has to be said - a lot lot more support. | ||

Well I'm struck by how many of you people love your football in its various codes. I'm not much of a fan myself, which is kinda ironic as I work as a designer at The Daily Telegraph in Sydney and as I type, I'm awaiting the outcome of the first RF and RL matches of the season so I can design the cover of the Sport section. I'd love to say I have many varied interests but it just wouldn't be true. It's always been music, reading about music, docos about music, and fetishing about 60's design of everything and fitting it in with a family life with 2 little children. As far as Go-B history goes, I fell for them having shared a painting space at art college in 1984 with a fellow who had three tapes which got thrashed literally every day: Scritti Politti's "Cupid and Psyche", Lloyd Cole's "Rattlesnakes" and the enduring masterpiece, "Before Hollywood". The rest is, well, you know the rest.. | ||

Musically a big fan of Cathal Couglan as well as the GBs - I reckon they need the money more than, say U2. I first heard them on a compilation tape - and that was it. They were the soundtrack to my student life in Leeds in the 80s. And then working and family life ever since. | ||

Peter, I am just old enough to remember seeing the 1969/70 FA Cup Final on TV and it resulted in me running around for years afterwards in a royal blue shirt with a white number 9 on the back. I was aware from other posts of your involvement with the CI fanzine and think you and your colleagues deserve a lot of credit for your efforts for confronting the racism issue amongst the supporters. I still shudder at the thought of what poor Paul Canoville had to endure. On a happier note, Wilson, great idea, but how do you get Pat on here, he doesn’t seem to have a website. I'd heard about the racism issue among some Chelsea fans before but didn't think it was as prevalent as seems on this board. Is that the reason why there were quite a few Irish flags being waved by the Catalonians at the Barcelona game on Wednesday?? | ||

XY765 - the Irish flags may well have been Celtic flags. Celtic played them 4 times in Euro competition recently (we knoecked them out of the EUFA cup!!) and I guess that our fans probably built up a good rapport with Barcas fans. Also, the greatest player in Celtics history, Henrik Larsson, now plays for Barcelona. Of course I could be miles of the mark, but Ive a hunch this is why | ||

I would imagine the Irish flags were less to do with Chelsea specifically, or even with Celtic, than to do with Barcelona playing an English team and thinking that maybe this was a way to wind our fans up. My wife's half-Irish, my brother is married to a Cork woman and with a name like Collins I'm sure there's Irish blood in me somewhere, so negligible effect on me. Chelsea actually have more Irish support than you might imagine. As for Pat posting on here - stranger things have happened. | ||

Incidentally, racism was a massive concern among Chelsea fans (and a great many other sets of fans) back in the 70s and 80s, but thanks to the efforts of the club, the authorities and (though i say it myself) a section of the fans, it's not that big a problem any more. Having said that, on the eve of a match with Spurs (noted, probably with little evidential reason for doing so) as a club with a substantially Jewish following, it has to be said that there's still some debate going on about whether calling them y**s (please don't make me spell it out) is offensive. To me, it's a no-brainer - the word is out of order. But there are some who would have you believe it's not offensive. There's even a group of Tottenham fans who wave Stars of David and call themselves the Y** Army - which leads to the appalling argument from numbskulls that it's ok to use the word about them because they are calling themselves that anyway. It's a wee bit complicated and I'm sorry to bore you with it, but them's the facts. I sit next to a couple of Jewish people and even they vary in their attitude to it - one shrugs his shoulders and bears it, another gets very upset about it. | ||

I reside in Costa Mesa, CA, in the fabled (or mocked, depending on who's doing the talking) Orange County. This leads to some interesting resonance when listening to "Surfing Magazines", since this is surfing mecca for the states...Where I actually work, Huntington Beach, lays claim to being "Surf City"... Glad to see that there's at least one other So Cal denizen on this board, Randy. Maybe we can start a petition to get the GBs to play in the area soon... I work in HR (or personnel - it occurs to me it might be called something completely different in Oz and the UK)and am pretty damned envious of all you who have interesting-sounding careers in the arts/journalism, etc... I am a GBs fan of huge, stalker-esque proportions - it's strange, they seem to be one of those musical fancies you don't outgrow, unlike some of the other 80's names batted about on this board. And, they don't seem to be in danger (the GBs) of fading anytime soon. I think their newest disc is about as good as anything they've ever done, perhaps just a notch behind "16 LL". | ||

Andrew - deadly serious. Dalglish ended up being a fantastic player but he did not spend his prime years at Celtic Park. Of course he was a legend, butjust behind Henrik for me. The Lisbon Lions were collectively part of a great team, Henrik made Celtic a better team simply by being in the team. | ||

I'm from a small town near Middlesbrough in NE England but I've lived in London for about 6 years. On the subject of football I'm a Sunderland fan (and boy am I being punished for it this season! - bottom of the Premiership without a home win and only nine games left this season) I work as an office administrator, play bass in bands. I'm addicted to going to gigs..seen the Go-Bees 7 times and another of my all time faves R.E.M. 10 times. I've recently been switched on to some excellent new bands (most of them were support bands I just 'happened' to watch) The Young Knives, Sluts of Trust, The Plugs, Nightmare of You, Vincent Vincent & The Villans...I'm sure many of folk on the board would be into them if they had been given greater publicity...it's the age old thing I suppose. | ||

Hi, all. Great thread, Spence. For my sins and because I've done it for too long now I'm a social worker. Grew up in Suffolk and now living in Hungerford, Berkshire. Surrounded by Aussies at work, one or two of whom have heard of the Gobees. Got into the band at the end of the first time around, but didn't see the band, then. Making up for it now. Enjoying the recent flurry of activity - if nothing else because virtually the whole of my CD collection has had a positive mention around the place. Though living in the right part of the country I support neither Man Utd, Liverpool or Chelsea but still follow Ipswich, trying to encourage my boys to follow the local team here (Reading) who are about to join the big time - but they ain't really interested . . . | ||

I'm a nurse in St. Paul, MN. 33 years old and turned onto the GoB's when I was 15 by the boy I lost my virginity to, on that very night. I know, TMI, but it's so poignant that I had to share. I have their acoustic comeback-tour show poster I tore down from the club's facade framed in my bedroom because it's the best show I've ever attended of any band, ever, in 18 years of seeing my favorite bands live. Drove 8 hours to Chicago to see this last tour. Still have the ratty GoB's mixtapes from old boyfriend preserved in a shoebox. Ah. Life. | ||

Panda, I relate to the poignancy in your tale...way back in the day, when everything wasn't widely available on CD, you couldn't find the GBs on disc, at least in the crummy burg I lived in (Baton Rouge, La.). So I carried around a tattered copy of "Metal and Shells" on cassette forever. It was quite shocking when I found out the GBs had other discs and all those great songs had lives on proper albums...That tape is one of the few I didn't just leave on my curb, once cassettes became hopelessly outdated... Also, you were fortunate to lose your virginity to someone with such good taste. Sadly, I lost mine to a Journey fan... | ||

I live in Southeast Michigan and work as an IT consultant in the Automotive Industry (of course the Detroit area.) Love to check out this board every few days. Very interesting read. Play indoor adult socc..er..i mean..football and it's loads of fun. Also love to listen to my 4 year old singing Black Mule from the DVD CD. She cracks up at the "salt on his back" and asks me for why they would do that. I have no answer. She also sings Born to a Family which is more hilarious coming from a 4 yr. old. I play and write songs on my guitar and as a duo with a good friend. Recently purchased an acoustic bass as well to round out our coffeehouse gigs. Saw the Go-Betweens on the 1999 acoustic tour in Pontiac, MI at 7th house. And like Michael wrote got to go back to the dressing room after the show for a chat and some pictures. Great guys. Robert was trying to pass out the Heinekens the club gave them and Grant was trying not to be in photographs. It was one of my favorite shows ever and I've seen 100s. Jeff, checked out your band. Nice work. I'm amazed that you do not list the Ocean Blue as an influence. To me, there's an uncanny resemblance. Do you know them? | ||

I live outside Manchester, New Hampshire USA. I work from home as an internet sales consultant for a textile manufacturer. This gives me the luxury of listening to music through my tinny Toshiba speakers for much of the day while working. I was introduced to Before Hollywood in 1983 by college friends. Been a fan ever since. Saw the band at a tiny club in Cambridge, Massachusetts back in the '80s (don't remember which tour it was). Standing in front of the stage I was positively transfixed. For whatever reason, Grant was so amazed by my smiling countenance that he leaned over and touched my cheek. In my spare time I write and teach about yoga philosophy and practice. I spent most of the '90s living in a yoga ashram. |
