I was quite touched on the way to work in Sydney today when I saw so many people wearing green. I don't know why it touched me today as it never previously has - wearing green for St Patrick's Day is a US, not Irish, tradition. Getting drunk on St Patrick's Day is relatively new to Ireland too, as up to 42 years ago pubs in Ireland were closed on the day!

I'm not wearing any green today (my ratty Ballybunion golf club t-shirt is not appropriate wear for work) but I will most likely get drunk.

Happy St Patrick's Day all.

Cheers Pádraig,

Mrs Suite and I are heading this evening to the only bar in Trento that sells Irish stout - unusually, its Murphys instead of Guinness. I can't wait.

Sláinte,

Cichli

Had a few myself today Cichli! Do you ever drink Beamish? I was drinking that when I was back home last summer. I was in a bar in Cork one night with two friends, one of whom was drinking Guinness and the other Murphys. So I went up to the counter and asked for "A pint of Guiness, a pint of Murphys and a pint of Beamish please". The bar girl thought I was joking!

Pádraig,

I only drink Beamish when I am at home! It's a superior pint, especially in Cork! I had some great pints in the Long Valley Pub in Cork city over the Christmas period.

I'm all for more diversity in the beer market in Ireland. The Diageo/Guinness stranglehold on the taps in pubs (and the imagination of drinkers) is a bad thing.

Happy St Patricks day lads. Its a double day of celebration today (tinged with sadness)given that the funeral of Celtic legend Jimmy Johnstone has brought Glasgow to a halt this morning. I'll be rasing a glass to Patrick and Jimmy tonight.
