This format, music performances on DVD, has really caught on lately - at least in the states. And I have succumbed to it: there are some great ones out there, and it's big fun when you find one... I am genuinely curious about what is blowing up people's skirts in this particuar medium. Here's some I've enjoyed. (I'm excluding "Striped Sunlight", since I'm presuming everyone's already digging on it.): 1) Seven Worlds Collide - Neil Finn and Friends 2) Stop Making Sense - Talking Heads 3) Live in Memphis - Elvis Costello & Imposters 4) Live From Austin, TX - Lucinda Williams 5) " " - Johnny Cash 6) " " - Texas Tornadoes (These last three are all from the Austin City Limits series and I have to give them extra kudos for their sterling, pristine sound and crystal clear photography. If you like these artists, you can't go wrong...) 7) Straight No Chaser - Thelonious Monk 8) Ladies and Gentlemen...Mr. Leonard Cohen (Cheating a bit with these last two, as they're more documentaries than performance films, but they're just so friggin' fascinating.) 9) Live in NYC - Bruce Springsteen & E St. Band 10) The Last Waltz - The Band and others And, I'm really looking forward to the N.Young concert doc, "Heart of Gold"...I'm laying dollars to donuts that it'll be great. | ||

Stop Making Sense An Evening with Lou Reed - from an '84 show at the Bottom Line, with the great Reed/Quine/Saunders/Maher band...and Lou still had a bit of a singing voice left, so he doesn't murder the VU covers with awful vocals the way he's done for the last 15 years or more. I don't know if it counts because it's not really a performance film, but DIG!, featuring the Brian Jonestown Massacre and Dandy Warhols, is really outstanding. I read yesterday that a PJ Harvey live video is coming out in a month or two, which I'm excited about. | ||

Agree about DIG!, though at times it really was like watching a trainwreck. Poor Anton Newcombe - watching him is a study in mental illness. I watched some of it with the commentary soundtrack, where the Dandies,though kindly souls, made wisecracks. Hilarious stuff. Oddly enough, though so much was made of BJM's genius and innovations, I preferred the music of the Dandies, thought it more accessible and more bullshit free. I also liked their personalities much more: nice, un-assuming, and absolutely refusing to take themselves (or BJM) seriously. I think I saw the PJ Harvey performance of which you speak on cable, as part of the...no idea how to spell it, Eurorocknees(?) series. If that's the one they're putting on DVD,it's a great one. Lively, spirited, and it looks like Polly Jean is having a great time. I hate it when musicians seem bored and pissed off - if they're not excited and interested, why should we be? | ||

You know, after watching DIG! I borrowed a couple of Brian Jonestown Massacre CDs, and you know what? They're not quite the geniuses the Dandys make them out to be. In small doses, they're good, but I don't think Anton ever met a two- or three-chord progression he couldn't drag out for eight minutes. You're right--he is seriously wacked out. But the Dandies bullshit-free? Clearly you haven't read enough interviews with Courtney "Taylor-Taylor" (as he's taken to calling himself)! | ||

Not to split hairs (not on this board, noooo), but I said "more bullshit free" (that's probably a little like "99% fat free")...admittedly, in comparison to Anton, that ain't sayin' much... No, make no mistake, "TT" has an ego run amok and is a silly bugger in general, at least based on what I saw in the film. Don't think I've read any interviews with him...Guess the Dandies are pretty much played. | ||

More on Lou Reed: that '84 performance sounds worth seeking out - I'll probably end up buying it. But, have you seen him lately? He's got his Tai Chi (or whatever the hell it is) master on stage with him, performing "moves"...it's pretty silly. | ||

I hear you, Hardin. I don't think anyone could be more of a Lou Reed fan than I've been for the past 30 (!) years, but he really needs to retire. He's become embarrassing and even I can't listen to that croak of a voice anymore. "The Raven" had some decent music, but what a silly, silly idea--and didn't the Alan Parsons Project do Poe decades ago? Funny thing is, Lou's "Ecstasy" album from 2000, if edited down to about 50 minutes, was one of his best albums ever. But it's all gone wrong since. | ||
