Kev, this is far outside my sphere of expertise (though I love the stuff you mention that I know, like Wyatt's version of Shipbuilding), so I won't weigh in, but I had a related question: is the compilation "Rough Trade Guide to the Fall" a decent comp to get? I have some Fall, in fact, I got the Peel Radio Sessions box set, cuz it was like $20 used, am open to getting more, just don't wanna shell out for everything they've done over the past 30 yrs...due to those issues we discussed in the "Size" thread. So, I was looking for a few worthy entries...that partucular one is at my used shop... |

Its tough Hardin, but if I was going to recommend just 3 Fall albums for example they would be: Grotesque (after the gramme) Hex Enduction Hour This Nations Saving Grace These are from the early-mid 80s.If you wanted something more up to date, the last 2 albums are solid 8 out of 10 efforts |

Thanks for the suggestions, kev. I will seek those out. btw, I have the latest (?) "Fall Heads Roll" but can't get it to play on my CD player! That wacky Fall chose to issue it as a black CD, in other words, the whole reflective side is colored black, and my CD player doesn't like that (is your copy black?)...and of course, I've lost the receipt. but, I've heard snippets - it sounds like it would, at least in theory, be a great, rockin' CD. |

Yeah, I really like Discolation Dance. Seems like they were pretty underrated, though. But I think their two full length LPs are great. And they shared the Paleys' trumpet player Andy Diagram! |

Hardin, disappointingly my copy of FHR has a boring silver reflective side. I have never heard of CDs with a black reflective side, is this a USA thing? |

Kevin, it's at least a USA thing for FHR...they touted it as a special limited edition, or some bs like that...don't know if you can get it with a silver side here, though. I have had other CDs with black sides (that actually play) before, though...one that comes to mind is the Jay-Z black album (that has one of my all time faves, 99 Problems, on it). Spence, don't know if you feel like shelling out for it, but the excellent post-punk history, "Rip It Up and Start Again" has a good and really informative chapter on Rough Trade. |
