I've been encouraged to discover there are so many devoted Go-Betweens fans out there. I was wondering how the broader musical tastes of GBs fans compared. If there is some common link which defines the expectations Gbs fans have of the music they listen to. I thought this could be be highlighted if you were to list five other musical artists you would rate as highly or as dearly as the Gbs.

As far as any common link to my musical tastes goes- As i get older I continue to prefer articulate songs written by individuals who are my senior. Even if they were younger than me when they wrote most of their material. I guess I just doubt younger contempory songwriters can tell me anything I need to know or haven't already heard.

For the record, in addition to the Gbs these are my 5- Bob Dylan
Neil Young
U2
Neil Finn
Leonard Cohen

Welcome Charles! I think if you look in the "off topic" section that you will find many threads and many more opinions there.
You see, we used to discuss that stuff here, but just in the last week or so, it's all been thrown into "Off Topic". Hell, I'm suprised they let you even post this here!! Only straight Go-Betweens in this section I'm afraid!! And please don't use "a word starting with w about sexual self stimulation" or talk about others' drug use either, heaven forbid!!

Definitely check all our "off topic" threads, Charles. We're constantly arguing about, deriding and defending our own and each other's heroes.

Spence, werent McCarthy a C86 type band who mutated into Stereolab?
Try as I might I just dont "get" Felt, at least on the tracks I heard from years gone by? Any albums I should investigate?

HI Kev

yep Tim Gane guitarist formed Stereolab, who quite frankly bore me, I am sure they are good sometimes...McCarthy were so great, excellent tunes, quick fire, like Wire in a way. OK, politicised lyrics, but fun. the album I am a wallet will always be one of my faves. They were a touch like the Smiths, they had a sweet chiming sense withthe guitars, clever too, but the Smiths (Handsome Devil) thing was to be found in the Rockabilly style of some of the songs. Believe it or not, rockabilly can be an influence in so much, even Josef K (Forever Drone). They matured/mutated a lot in 2 years, Banking and Inner violence today is great, also I think its called the Raged will inherit the earth?
Felt are an aquired taste, they are not everyone's cup of thrills! The thing is, is that they were cool. The bands that are cool don't always have to sound great. I think that's where they were coming from. My favourites would be complied track by track from itunes, but my faves are Pictorial Jackson Review, Me and a monkey on the moon, Bubblegum Pop (comp), and/or the rcent best of, or the 2 x Cherry Red best ofs. When I saw them years ago, they were apart from the original Del Amitri (1st ever album is genius) and The Monochrome Set, the only group around who sounded like Television, which was no bad thing. I mean Days from Adventure was surely written for Lawrence!! I hope there's something there you like Kev.

Hmmm, Kevin. Well, Lawrence definitely gets bogged down in his schtick. His Lou-Reed-once-removed vocal style can get boring and undercuts some occasionally great lyrics. If you like a bit of Cocteaus, head for "Primitive Painters" since it has Elizabeth Fraser on it. The entire album "Ignite the Seven Cannons" is produced by Robin Guthrie and it sounds like it.

Maurice Deebank's guitarwork is unarguably superb but he's gone after 1985. While I picked on Martin Duffy's busy Hammond organ on another thread I agree with Spence's recommendation of "Me and a Monkey on the Moon." In fact I also favor another Duffy-heavy album "Forever Breathes the Lonely Word" as well where Tony Wille tries his damnedest to fill in for Deebank. But it cannot be denied that Felt can be monotonous if you aren't into them.

It sure is him Randy

Primal Scream (sometimes abbreviated PRML SCRM) are an experimental rock supergroup from Scotland, headed by former Jesus & Mary Chain drummer Bobby Gillespie. Other members include guitarists Andrew Innes and Robert 'Throb' Young, former Felt keyboardist Martin Duffy, former Stone Roses bassist Gary 'Mani' Mounfield, and touring guitarist and producer Kevin Shields, formerly of My Bloody Valentine.

Primal Scream should split up me thinks.

A very patchy career built on the three r's, rock n roll, reputation and rabid shennanegans from Mr McGee! rather than musical substance. they have been, I suppose, ground breaking in some ways, but its all abit tedous for my liking.

Dare I say it, last of the great bands form the 80's?

Primal Scream - glad they're around, glad I don't have to listen to their albums.

I like "Screamadelica" mind, but then everyone does.

Spence, you are probably right – but at least Primal Scream were responsible for one perfect pop song, without Velocity Girl, I wonder if I would be a GBs fan?

Mark, yep, you are right. Without Orange Juice though, there's no Primals, and I would not of liked/heard GB's had it not been for the Collins clan beating the semi acoustics along...
