You've considered what Gbs songs you would like to hear covered by other artists. Have you discussed what songs you would like to hear the Gbs cover? When I encountered "You're A Big Girl Now" on the 16LL reissue bonus disc, it was what would have been my first choice. It didn't disapoint. Good call Charles! should provide some interesting posts. My votes are bizarre but this just popped into my head - I can hear it as clear as day Robert - 'The Bends' by Radiohead It would be a very different acoustic driven stripped down version. It would have an Alt Country feel and a slightly daring slower tempo. Robert would be wonderful with his arch intonations on lines where Thom Yorke snears. Grant - 'She Will Have Her Way' by Neil Finn (from his first solo record) Ok I'm cheating here - borrowing someones excellent suggestion that Neil Finn should sing 'Quiet Heart'. We should get a petition going for that recording and send it to www.frenz.com - an excellent Finn/Split Enz etc website. (well it would make me feel better!) I can see a comparison as well as a difference in Grant and Neil's voices. I don't think that song would seem too out of place on 'In Your Bright Ray'. | ||

I'm of the mind, especially given the recent rise of appalling artists ruining quite classic songs, that the more obscure the cover version the better, so, with this in mind I would love to hear the Go Betweens covering The act of being polite by The Residents or maybe Only losers take the bus by The Fatinma Mansions. | ||

My contrarian answer is "none" because they don't produce enough of their own songs to need to do covers, but I realize this is just for fun. So I'd say Dylan's "Positively Fourth Street" sung by Robert and Costello's "New Amsterdam" sung by Grant. Jeff, do you mean "Sentimental Lady" with a gender flip? | ||

The GBs book alludes to Grant doing a spot on cover of "Daydream Believer" at a karoake bar...I'd love to hear that. Also, extending the Dylan theme, I'd love to hear Grant do one of Zimmy's latter period depresso ballads, like "Not Dark Yet" or, maybe, "Most of the Time". For Robert, I'd love to hear him do "Leopard Skin Pillbox Hat", for some reason - I think he could really work with the inherent humor there..."I Want You" could be really sweet, too, sung by RF...particularly apropos, since he's attempted to approximate the "wild, mercury sound" on occassion (People Say). | ||

Good to hear some favourable support for later era Dylan, continuing the theme' Id like to hear Grant do a version of "Po' boy" from Love and Theft. It's got one of those cheerful bouncy melodies, he can deliver so beautifully. Despite Bobs noble effort, all the charm, the meloncholly and humour in the song might be served up a little hotter. From the same album I'd like to hear Robert have a crack at "Floater". It's got some choice little passages of lyrics it would be good to hear him interpret. Like "Got to get up close to the teacher if you can, if you want to learn anything" | ||
