Mentioned by a couple of people somewhere - anyway went to see them last night not necessarily my cup of tea but I do like their guitar sound and especially that hilarious song about 'Never seeing Lynyrd Skynrd but sure saw Molly Hatchet'. Really good night - something infectious about the way they seem to just enjoy playing their music and are prepared to put in a two hour set. Also somehow enjoy that southern US, beardy, check shirted, good ol boys stuff. Oldest audience I've ever seen at a gig mind definitely some over 60's there. | ||

Those poor "over 60's"...nobody will believe 'em today when they say they're hard of hearing because of a rock concert! It's curious that the Truckers have a following across the Pond. Their stuff, to me, is almost an ironic, post-modern comment on all those awful, peckerwood bands like Skynrd and Molly Hatchet that were forced down my throat in the south, while at the same time co-opting all the best, rockin' parts of it. I HAD to listen to that crap, because it was everywhere you couldn't get away from it. At least you guys over there were able to get away from it. LOL. | ||

I saw Drive By Truckers five years ago in a bar in Texas. I was not impressed and I especially remember disliking that one about 'Never seeing Lynyrd Skynrd but sure saw Molly Hatchet'. However, I have quite liked the songs of theirs I've heard on Uncut CDs since then. I think I missed their humour and just took them as the rednecks they were most likely lampooning. | ||

read an online article last night in which patterson hood states that his band are more influence by the replacements, the faces and big star than lynard skynard - makes sense to me especially when you hear the new album. after reading up quite a lot on this band recently, and hearing the onstage banter last week, it is clear to me that the "good ol boy","redneck" skynard descriptions they get tagged with are done tongue in cheek | ||

Now that I'm a "big boy" and can more or less afford it, I buy way too much music. Consequently, I end up with too much to listen to, and often don't give stuff enough of a chance, because there really are some things that are growers, and paradoxically, those things are often the things you really come to love. For instance, for all my blathering on about it, it took approximately a year of intermittent listening for 16 LL to sink in for me, and develop into the full blown love affair I have now with it. So it was with the Truckers. I had their So. Rock Opera, which I bought because of the buzz and the originality and humor of the concept. Didn't really grab me, though. Then, long story short, I got "Decoration Day", eventually listened carefully, and was really gobsmacked by the great songs. These guys are fine fine songwriters. Can't wait to hear the new one. BTW Kev, have you heard P. Hood's solo record? Interesting, if not great. | ||

Hey Kev, I'll have you know I picked up the new DBT today...it finally came out here. It almost doesn't have to be good, I got it so cheap: $7.99, at Best Buy, sort of a "category killer" electronics chain they have here... This thing has gotten rave reviews in the media over here, as well as from you, so I'm actually a bit excited...I'll let you know my review soon as I listen, but it's hard to imagine that I won't like it... | ||

Hope you enjoy it Hardin - its maybe a bit slicker than you will have heard them before, and they do seem to be going for the commercial crossover judging by the fact one or two songs have anthemic choruses just crying out for radio. Still, who can begrudge them, especially Hood and Cooley who have definetely paid their dues. Today I rented a copy of the DBTs live DVD. Shot at the 40 Watt club in Athens GA they were just launching the tour for The Dirty South album, have you watched it? Quite enjoyed it on first listen although a slight criticism from me would be that they seemed to be playing for the camera - a few too many guitar wig outs for my liking! | ||

Yeah, now they've been together what? 10 years? So they definitely deserve any success or grab at the brass ring... Sounds dang tasty, Kevin...I'm gonna go home, put on my dirtiest checked flannel shirt, suck down a coupla 40 oz. malt liquors and enjoy! Maybe I'll even rent that video - sounds great. | ||

I made up a compilation Drive By Truckers CD for playing in the car - 21 tracks cherrypicked from their last 3 albums. Every track is a gem and I wondered to myself why this band arent massive, leaving aside the fact they are not the best looking band in the world, which depressingly these days seems to matter more than how good the actual music is. And then I thought, thank God they havent broken through because it would probably ruin them just like many a band before them. Dont know what they would think themselves though, I'm sure they would love to be huge  | ||
