Hi, this is my first post. I'm not sure what people think of The Vines, but they seem to cop a lot of criticism, but I really like them. In the booklet for their new record Vision Valley it says that an Amanda Brown played violin. I was just wondering if anyone knew if this is the same Amanda Brown of the go-betweens and cleopatra wong? Also, does anyone here not detest The Vines? | ||

Im maybe not best placed to judge David, given that Im in my 40s and this music is probably aimed at teens/20s, but I just dont rate this lot. Poor mans Nirvana imo. I havent heard the middle album, but after hearing the first album a good few times, and the latest one a couple of times I could not see any progression - most songs still lasting less than 2 mins,all that stuff the pixies used to do so well - the fast/slow/fast (which interestingly enough was ripped off by Nirvana). I think the Pitchfork review of their album summed them up well, the reviewer gave it something like 3.4 out of 10 and jokingly said that if you added up the marks that Pitchfork had awarded the 1st and 2nd albums, along with the 3.4 it amost reached a 10. made me laugh anyway  | ||

ps , welcome aboard David, and I meant to say that if you like them thats great. I remember loving the Stranglers when I was 16 and everybody said they ripped off The Doors, well I didnt care about that and still loved what the Stranglers were doing. Fast forward a few years and I had been fully exposed to the Doors back catalogue,then I could see how wise those Stranglers nay sayers were. | ||

Welcome, David. I too do not not detest the Vines. But more power to you for liking 'em, if you do...it's just taste and no one's taste is superior or inferior to any one else's. Originality's another matter, but really, is anything truly original? As Kevin points out, the stone-brilliant Nirvana modeled their sound on the mighty Pixies... The way you couched your question, though, you knew not many would care for them, right? No clue about Amanda but hope it's true, hope she's getting work. It's probably a moronic song, Kevin, but I love "Peaches" - it makes me smile. It just has so much verve and moxie. Did you see "Sexy Beast" where it was used to such clever effect? Great movie - who knew Sir Ben could be so scary? | ||

Hardin , yes I saw Sexy Beast and as I said in the recent Films thread I found that particular film very uncomfortable to watch. I guess everybody involved in that film would then think "job done" The Stranglers probably came in to their own live, saw them once upon a time in the late 70s at the legendary Glasgow Apollo and the place was rammed. the gig was going well enough but then they played "five minutes", probably not their best song but it was the launching pad for the rest of the gig to really take off and become (my current buzzword)incendiary. They werent very PC though | ||

The Stranglers had shit potential, true. Get A Grip On Yourself, No More Heroes were great singles though... and Golden Brown is a distant cousin of Cattle & Cane. | ||

I'm just guessing, but there can't be too many Amanda Browns who play violin and are well-known enough around Sydney to be invited to play on an album. I don't consider The Vines the worst band around, but I wouldn't consider buying any of their albums. | ||

Around Highly Evolved they were hyped up so much that I suppose it was inevitable they would recieve come backlash. I think the criticism of Winning Days was maybe a bit overboard though. I've been reading these messageboards for a while and haven't noticed any mention of them before. I think maybe the age gap is significant too, because I'm only turning 20 this year. That's probably why I wasn't expecting too many fans here. I understand the criticism of them though, firsty the Nirvana comparisons don't help I think. To be honest I don't see it that much, but it certainly is there on some tracks. I actually prefer their "ballads" or their slower songs. In some ways I agree with the lack of progression, however I think on Vision Valley they are showing signs of moving forward. But then again that might be my blind bias. But thanks for all sharing your thoughts. If I could possibly recommend a song that I think people should hear by The Vines I'd say Spaceship, just if anyone is interested. Thanks | ||

Never heard the Vines and it sounds like I don't need to. Kevin, on the subject of the Doors, hop into the way-back machine just a little bit longer and check out a slightly earlier Sunset Strip band, the Seeds. Totally buck-toothed two-digit IQ lyrics but that's where the Doors got their sound. Their big hit at the time was "Pushin' Too Hard" but their first single "I Can't Seem to Make You Mine" (later covered by Alex Chilton, god love him) makes the point more clearly. I love the Seeds, btw. | ||

I have of course heard of the Seeds, just not heard too much of their stuff. ps - good to see you keeping up the side of our american branch of the GO-Bs worship - site. Those lightweights Hardin and Jeff have chucked it for the weekend, as has our OZ branch corresponsdant Padraig - probably p1$$ed on 4XX or whatever the lightweight is drinking these days spence is probably off on one somewhere, lucky barsteward - maybe seeing the future of brit rocknroll in some manky dive somewhere. abigail looks like she has got hacked off with the all too serious fanboy stuff on here recently, come back abigail we need some female perspective amongst the nerdy sh1t. over and out | ||

I like The Vines. They're an extraordinarily uncool band to like if you're into "serious" indie rock, hence pitchforkmedia's 3.4-esque reviews. But I think they're fun, have good tunes etc. I'll be the first to admit they basically have two songs ... the Nirvana one and the John lennon one, but their first two albums still get listened to fairly regularly. I haven't got "Vision Valley" yet but will soon-ish. | ||

Kevin, I just saw your funny post now too! It's funny, it did occur to me over the weekend that I would be a few days without posting here! I made a concerted effort not to even turn the computer on from Thursday to Monday. I don't like XXXX beer. It's weak pish. I'd rather drink 5 bob - and that's woeful stuff. (Glasgow beer reference there folks). I drank a couple of bottles of Hahn at the weekend, nothing more. | ||
