I'm wondering what people think of EMI's policy of putting copy protection on every single Australasian release for the last few years. What do people think of this technology? I DETEST it, and have refused to buy an EMI Australia/New Zealand pressing for the last three years. Oddly, the UK versions of most of these albums don't have the copy protection, so amazon.co,uk has been my friend. As a notorious mix-CD compiler and iPod user, I really object to the "fair use" of these CDs being erroded. Anyone have any thoughts? | ||

I agree. I've heard that Sony has been putting some sort of copy protection on US releases, as well as something that puts what basically amounts to "spyware" on one's computer that sends data back to Sony to monitor what people are doing with their CDs. But I haven't bought any new CDs on major labels in quite some time, so I havent' had to deal with this personally. I think it's deplorable, though. | ||

Forget the specifics, but Sony got in a whole shitload of trouble for that spyware debacle...the recent Neil Diamond disc was one that had it - a shame, because it's a great disc, and Neil caught a lot of undeserved repercussions... | ||

I don't download music and honestly don't blame The Industry (scum they may be) for trying to thwart it. And if I get a copy-protected disc that has a track I want to include on a mix, I'll just make an analog copy like I do with vinyl... that's what Radio Shack cables are for. | ||

Yeh, I find the copy-protection thing very annoying. I have a CD player that doesn't play them properly - stops at the nine second mark in each song. They play fine on computer, but it is quite a nuisance. | ||

Lawrence, iTunes can still rip from EMI's copy protected CDs and does so without problem. If it did not do so I would not buy any EMI CDs. I laugh every time I rip an EMI to the iPod. | ||

I find, Lawrence, that "Nero 5.(?)" efficiently by-passes all copy protection stuff. If you're having trouble with the emi stuff, get a burn of Nero and fiddle with all cd's to your hearts content. |
