It appears to be a good summer coming up, at least on the music front. We have the reissues next month plus the 2 shows in London and Dublin. I am also looking forward to the beastie boys new single and album, I know there are some hip-hop fans here,"ch-check it out" sounds brilliant. I am also toying with the idea of seeing Bob Dylan at Fleadh. Oh and of course England are going to win Euro 2004. |

Yes, very much looking forward to the reissues and the new Beastie Boys album. I picked up a copy of "Check Your Head" for the princely sum of $3 yesterday. Wish Dylan would tour here again. Is he still playing keys on stage or is his back better? |

I'll say the summer is looking good. Best gig since I got to London was Preston School of Industry, last night of their tour. 3-4 beers and they sounded much better than the album. Last time I saw Bob was in Melbourne 99 or 2000 can't quite recall, after the Histoplasmosis that nearly took him away, it was fantastic, pointy boots and brilliant night. Not so sure I want to spoil that memory. Did you see him then Pete? Also going to Pixies, Wilco, Belle and Sebastian. |

Yeah, I saw him in either '98 or '99 - the tour right after he released 'Time Out of Mind (1997)' anyway. I had terrible seats and the sound was atrocious. I recall a blindingly good version of 'Masters of War' and the new numbers were great. I think he's been back twice since then. The Pixies were a teenage favourite of mine, I don't really listen to them anymore but if they came to Melbourne I'd see them for sure. I doubt thats likely to happen due to Frank Black's reputed fear of flying. Saw the Breeders last year, though, and Kim Deal sang some Pixies classics to my amazement (such as 'Gigantic' and. . . oh, the alchohol hazed memory). |

Seats and beer can make the difference. I was sober and being the first time I'd seen bob it was superb, maybe not the same show. I'm very keen to see the impact of Kim Deal in the Pixies line up, I suspect she got blacked out by Frank, but clearly her bass melodies are an enormous part of the Pixies sound, viz the Breeders melodies being more lucrative than Franks solo career. |

Fact: the Breeders' "Last Splash" is one of Grant's favourite albums. Well, I read that in an interview somewhere. He said elsewhere in the article that he wished he'd written 'One Divine Hammer' too. I can definetly see the similarities between Grant's writing and that songs pop sensibilities. I also wish I'd written that song. Frank's first two solo albums just don't cut it for me (which is why I gave up after only two). Not so with the Breeders. Michael, you're right about Kim Deal and melody. Frank's great but some artists need some quality control (ahem, Morrissey, McLennan) and being part of a band (or a "democracy" as Grant calls it in David Nichols' book) can be the best gauge. |

Pete I agree some artists need some quality control. In fact, I suppose most of them do. It's interesting that you cite Grant as one of those. It's "Warm Nights" that always makes me think of the need for another person imposing some quality control. |

Dog In the Sand was a return to form for Frank Black if you've heard that, I think better than Teenager of the year apart from the novelty Pong and the sensational Headache. Interestingly Joey Santiago the Pixies guitarist plays a bit on Dog in the Sand, giving Frank more of the unique sound I enjoy, probably that Pixies thin electrical storm sound. As opposed to the thin rays of light etc. |
