In another thread, a couple of people mentioned "City of Lights" as being a great song. I sampled it in iTunes and all I heard in the 30-second snippet was instrumental work, plus it's less than two minutes long. Does it have any lyrics, or is it just an instrumental? I'd like to know before I buy it.

Also, is "Crystal Shacks" any good? Again, all I heard in the sample was guitars, no vocals.

City Of Lights is a superb song Kurt. The vocals are spoken by both Robert and Grant. A few lines each, that's all. The music starts out like a Phil Spector-produced soul stomper from the 60s and then mutates into something not too far removed from Randy Newman. It is probably the least Go-Betweens-like songs they have done. I wish I had the 7".

Crystal Shacks is nothing special but it has quite a nice groove to it. It's instrumental. Your life will not lack for not hearing it; but I bet you will want to download it anyway!

Sleeping Giant was on another format from that EP. I think I got it through a link from the Go-Betweens website. It's a Robert song that sounds more like his solo albums. I like it though.

City of lights is credited to Future Pilot AKA vs The Go-Betweens, and will be on the forthcoming Future Pilot album (the 7" sleeve says). So it's a collaboration, probably/possibly with the music by FPA. I got another FPA 7" with the song Lights of the City - same music (at least basically) same length, but another collab. (I can't remember with who right now).

yeah, 'Lights of the City' with Stu Murdoch and Sarah Martin from B&S. sushil dade seems to be really into collaborations - there's a whole album of'em, "future pilot a.k.a. Vs. a galaxy of sound".
I hear a lot of dade in the song "city of lights" with the go-betweens. I would love to know who played the piano, whether it's been Robert.

lyrics, as far as I could make out the lines (there's a lot of echo on the words):
Robert: Should you pass my way/
........./and the window is still open/in the deep of the night/the streetlight shimmers like a ghost/and the wind blows cold
Grant: Who will you love in the heat of the morning sun/when you finished all your sleep/
face a brand new day/ I'm gonna dedicate this one to the ones I love.

In any case, I like "City of Lights" and "Stone" best from the new batch of songs.

sloan -- really, you cannot log yourself in at the iTunes uk, with a new account perhaps? I downloaded it from the German iTunes store, it must be then, since I'm living in Germany...ahem.(thank god the installation and the downloading was fool-proof, that was my first and only downloading of songs so far! I detest that new way of having some songs on there which you cannot get anywhere else!! I don't like it. so, sloan, if you just can't find a way to get hold of these songs, mail me and I'll send them to you, the old-fashioned way. U.S. Postal Service! :-)

can anyone help me and complete the lyrics of "City of Lights"?

Julia

How does this sound?

Robert: Should you pass my way/ you may find/ the window is still open/ in the deep of the night/ the sea light shimmers like a ghost/ and the wind blows cold
Grant: Who will you love in the heat of the morning sun/ when you've finished all your sleeping/ face a brand new day/ I'm gonna dedicate this one to the ones I love.

oh thank you Eke! "You may find" was the bit still missing, and I think you're also right about "sea light" instead of "streetlights...I guess I was thinking that in suburbian Brisbane you can't usually see the sea - but then again, not all Forster songs are [purely]autobiographical... although the B-side, "Sleeping Giant", is clearly about Forster's then baby daughter Loretta, right? I was kind of dreading the first song that would deal with his settled down, family life, but "Sleeping Giant" is quite ok in that respect.

My copy of the Finding You 7" gives the writing credit for City of Lights to Sushil, so I guess he wrote the words too. Although they do sound like something Robert or especially Grant might have written. It really is a lovely piece.

I wasn't sure about "the sea light shimmers". I thought it could be "the sea might shimmer" but it didn't seem to fit. My intention was actually to return to your "streetlights", julia, as I couldn't be sure of any of my versions, but I forgot...

Not "the sea light shimmers" - "the city lights shimmer like a ghost". IMHO.
