The Go-Betweens, playing the Sydney Opera House, at sunset, featuring their brilliant new vocalist, singer-songwriter, and guitarist of God-like genius, Hardin Smith. The set list would consist primarily of a bunch of new songs that, artistically, surpass anything off of Liberty Belle, or 16 LL, or Before Hollywood. These songs were all technically written by Forster/McLennan, but because Hardin has something on the two (compromising pictures), he has blackmailed them into signing over songwriting credit. It is an astounding, life-changing concert, featuring all of the GBs’ many “hits”, PLUS the absurdly great new stuff (most critics feel it is approximately 10 times as good as the GBs previous best material, and freely proffer the opinion that Mr. Smith is the best thing to ever happen to the GBs). Many encores are played and, by the end of the night, the crowd is sweaty and exhausted , but completely sated (many have actually orgasmed). Because the audience, featuring many of Sydney’s elite movers and shakers (several Aussie movie stars are there, as well, including Nicole Kidman and Naomi Watts. Russell Crowe, thank God, is not), has quite willingly paid $1,000 a seat for this once in a lifetime event, there is a huge pot of money to divvied up at the end of the night. Hardin’s take will be 50% of the gross – it’s those pictures again! After the concert, backstage, Lindy and Amanda (who I forgot to mention, have rejoined the band, and are still looking great) feed Hardin frozen grapes and force him to drink champagne from their shoes. This affectionate behavior is strictly platonic though: Hardin is saving himself for the groupies lined up outside! | ||

Kurt, I think I went to the Triple Door when I was in Seattle. Is it the one that's next to that tremendous Thai restaurant? If so, I agree, that IS a great place. I saw a really funny faux lounge act, that did "crooner" versions of "alterna-hits", like Black Hole Sun, etc...On another night, the Bad Plus were playing on one of the several stages, and the audio from their show was being pumped into the bar I was in. I thought that was cool - who cares if you actually see a jazz combo play? | ||

Yeah, it must be the Triple Door you mean--Wild Ginger is the restaurant it's attached to (the food they serve at the shows is from Wild Ginger...yum). It's a tremendous venue...not really a rockin' place, but it was perfect for the Go-Betweens, which is really not a band you want/need to stand for. | ||

Boy, you guys get really active on this site when I'm asleep! I think Hardin has top marks so far. I'm a HUGE Ride fan, so shame on you Michael for not including them! It's funny, the Paisley underground stuff seemed to be percieved here in Auz as a bit "so what" as the Church at that time seemed to be leading the whole thing. I think my ideal gig would be via a walk through my house on a warm Australian summer afternoon/night. On the front lawn as you come through the gate is a reformed Ups and Downs playing the first 2 Waterfront singles, the "Sleepless" ep and assorted other songs, climaxing with "Gangway". As you get up to the front verandah, there's Grant and Robert doing a set of Dellray, He lives my life, The Wrong road, Darlo nights etc. As you walk into the house, the dining/lounge has first a set of Ride doing Going Blank Again and Mark Gardiner Carnival of Light songs. Next is the Church doing Blurred Crusade/Seance/Remote Luxury/Persia songs. After that and moving down the hallway, the back room has guys on a tabla, Sitar and Harmonium warming up the very select crowd of friends and family whilst they have dinner, for the main event, being organised by the Flaming Lips as artistic advisors. After everyone has eaten on the back verandah, the back yard is lit up to reveal a time warped classic line up Byrds playing all the hits and most of Younger than Yesterday. They are of course joined by a very jet lagged and bewildered Bob Dylan on appropriate songs and back him on his classics from the 60's. But the climax to the whole night begins with the a time warped '67 Beatles playing the best bits of Sgt Pepper, Revolver, Magical Mystery Tour, Rubber Soul, the White album and, at dawn, Here comes the sun and Abbey Road highlights, finishing of course with The End. Police have blockaded the street for many km's around as "word got around to all the towns, that this was the sound to beat all sounds". After a sumptuous breakfast, its down to Woonona beach where a time warped '66 Beach Boys (including Brian and Van Dyke Parks)are playing facing the sea whilst everyone has a surf. | ||

Talking about Ride, it was a shame really, but years ago, a good friend of mine had a pal, Tim Abott. He went into Creation originally to do an internal audit and ended up head of marketing. Around 93-94, my group was without a record deal and i had a meet arranged with tim, to pass ove a couple of cassettes to Alan McGhee. Anyway it did no good in the end, Tim was pissed as a fart and nicked a signed copy of Dexys Dance Stance 7'' that my mate Colin had brought along for me then proceeded to tell me abou this Oasis group, that they were more exciting than Ride etc and that Ride had had their day, and that all financial resources would probably go to pushing oasis... need I say anymore...we know where the money went... mind you, its hard to say how lond Ride would have stayedtogether for... most bands out of the shoegazing/baggy period were falling aporart after a couple of years, no staying power eh GB's?! I love padraig's gig, I'm there count me in! | ||

I don't mean to answer for Padraig, but you can't go too wrong with any Chills album. I suppose conventional wisdom is that "Submarine Bells" is the best, but "Soft Bomb" is excellent too. | ||

In reply to Jerry, probably 12 hours later, Ride disbanded in 96 just as their last album Tarantula came out. Tarantula was mostly Andy Bell songs. They reformed briefly one afternoon in about 2001 and recorded a wall of sound noisepiece, "Coming up for Air", for a BBC doco about Sonic Youth apparently.(It never made it out here - it sounds along the lines of "Grasshopper"). Mark Gardiner cut his hair and formed the Animalhouse with Loz Colbert(Ride drummer) and the producer of the first Supergrass album. Unfortunately the album was pretty stiff and most of it was written by that producer - hence they were unceremoniously dropped by that label and disbanded. Mark has since been playing live all around the world - even in Sydney much to my joy. He was just on 12 string acoustic with another bloke but they did an encore of "Leave them all behind" (competently) with the support band Dappled Cities Fly in full electric mode. He released an album last year (these beautiful ghosts) that I quite like. I don't think Ride will ever tour as a band but don't be suprised if they record a few more things - Andy and Mark have settled their personal differences and hopefully Andy will see the error in his ways of joining Oasis who are WAY past their use by date! | ||

I read a book about Stone Roses & in Andy Bell's interviews he explained how that band inspired Ride to form in the first place. It isn't too difficult to draw a line between the Roses & Oasis that at least partly explains why he's with them now. | ||

Today is definately national "Chills Rediscovery" day. Initial disappointment finds that Napster has zilch on The Chills front. A few inquiries to friends comes up trumps - borrowed Soft Bomb and have copied it to PC. Playing it back I seem to recognise the odd track, especially Male Monster... and the title track - must have heard it on John Peel back in the day. Then comes Song for Randy Newman - what a song, even on first listen. Padraig, I checked the Chills website, on the forum everybody seems to be plumping for Submarine Bells as the best Chills album - how do you rate that one? | ||

Kevin, I really like Submarine Bells but Soft Bomb is their stone classic for me. I got it when it came out after hearing Male Monster From The Id on Triple J (youth radio in Australia that I loved in 1992 but would now only listen to if you threatened to rip out my fingernails with a rustly pliars). The production on Soft Bomb is superb - a lot of money went into making it. The lyrics are brilliant - so much of it is about Martin Phillips being bitter about not making it. But not being bitter in an unproductive, hate-filled way; rather being bitter, thinking "I'll show you" and coming up with even better songs - which still didn't get to be hits. Soft Bomb was recorded in LA and the people who played on it were were the creme de la creme of "indie" session people such as Peter Holsapple. I saw them live in Sydney at the time and they were awesome. Most of the brilliant players from the album were also in the touring band. But it did not last long. Slash records decided the record was not going to be a hit, withdrew tour support and then dropped the band. I'm glad I saw them at what I consider to be their peak. Their 1996 album, Sunburnt, is also a wonderful record. It was recorded in England with a fraction of the budget of Soft Bomb but still sounds great. My Irish Times review of their b-sides, rarities, demos box set is on the softbomb.com site somewhere. I don't have much time for the chat room there though. | ||

Jerry, Tarantula might seem a letdown after their other stuff. It's "RAWWWK" if you know what I mean. Having said that, I do have a soft spot for the bounciness of "Sunshine/Nowhere to Run", "Black Nite Crash" for the time signature changing riff at the start and, obviously, the 12 string and crash of "Walk on water"(It's got terrible lyrics though!) It's an album to play VERY LOUDLY when very drunk and preferably ANGRY! Padraig, I will have to get Soft Bomb out again and play it if you rate it so highly. Haven't played it in years. I've got "Submarine Bells" only on vinyl and haven't got a turntable so I might have to get out the ol' cassette! By the way, I think it's got one of THE best album covers. Dave, it would be REALLY interesting to hear Billy Bragg discussing "selling out" with Peter Garrett backstage at your dream gig! I sent an email to every Labor MP recently against Uranium mining and have not heard A WORD from the former ACF head!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Traitor!!!!!!!!!!!!! | ||

Kevin and Padraig: you get a brief reprieve. Huge as it is, Amoeba had NOT ONE SINGLE CHILLS disc. Not one. Not in the new section and not in the used section. And what I really loved is that they did have cards for "Chills" and also "Chills Cont'd" in both the new section and the used section. I've ordered a copy of "Soft Bomb" via Amazon Marketplace. Amoeba also had NO Augie March. That really flattened me. So that will wait too. I managed to get out with only eight other purchases. | ||

Kevin, mostly completist things. Since Guy unwittingly got me back onto the Everly Brothers I've been mopping up a bunch of their 1960s things and I got four more. Plus two Mark Lanegan albums in the "used" section. I've only heard "I'll Take Care of You" so far; it's his "Kicking Against the Pricks." I got Calexico's new album. On one listen, I liked about half of it and the other half sounded like by-the-numbers alternarock that I might hear in a Starbuck's coffee outlet. And I got Neko Case' "Blacklisted" which Amoeba had been lacking on my previous visits. I shall first have to educate myself as to who Rilo Kiley is before hunting up Jenny Lewis. But there are also two Amoebas up where Jeff lives so she might be talking about one of those. I'm afraid I'm like most folks at Amoeba: too busy thumbing through the stacks, bumping into each other and hardly even looking up. | ||

Randy more likely has the straight poop, but I believe Amoeba is indeed a chain, that started up in San Francisco, in the famous, or infamous, "Haight". I like the Calexico, too, and Randy, if you ultimately decide you don't care for it,then Calexico may not be for you. I think it's their best. I'm also in the Chills camp, but only possess the two things that were widely released over here (at least to my knowledge, and short attention span): "Bells" and "Soft Bomb"...and, typical of the effect this board has, all of the above makes me want to hear more by them. | ||

Lovely to see the Chills getting some good comments - unfortunately Hardin there isn't a whole lot to hear - a brief summary of what's around is the Kaleidoscope World compilation which compiles their early singles from the early to mid 1980s (includes their contributions to the famous Dunedin Double EP, Pink Frost, Doledrums, Rolling Moon, Leather Jacket and the Lost EP), then there were 4 albums - Brave Words from 1987, Submarine Bells from 89ish, Soft Bomb in 92 and Sunburnt in 96. The only other releases have been the Secret Box set which Padraig reviewed (3 cds of live tracks, Peel Sessions and later singles and b-sides) and an EP from a year or two ago called Stand By (which us Chills fans are still doing in the hope that one day Martin might put out something else)...and there you have it - the entire collection other than a few songs on obscure compilations and few live tapes of the wonder that was the Chills live back in their 80s heyday - they're still gigging around NZ every now and then so there does remain hope that we'll see more recorded product one day... | ||

Hardin, Kevin: Amoeba actually started in Berkeley, back in 1990. It open up shop across the Bay in San Francisco 'til around '97 or '98, and then to LA a few years later. So, it's a mini-chain, I guess. Great store though. I've never been to the LA location, but I've been known to spend hours in the SF and Berkeley locations. I work really close to the Berkeley store, which means I spend too much money there on trips during lunch breaks. | ||

Spence, finally got a report back from my mate about the Fire Engines gig in Edinburgh. He said they were great, and as per usual the set was short and sweet - 25 mins. They played Get Up and Use Me, Lubricate Your Living Room, but not Candy Skin!! - how weird. He actually got more excited by a New York band called Battles - instrumental band with an amazing drummer apparently. PS - have you saw the issue of Uncut that came out today? there is an album review by a band you might have a vested interest in | ||

Late last week I saw Belle & Sebastian at the Hollywood Bowl. They were backed by the Los Angeles Philharmonic. Murdoch had become quite the hand-kissing pop star but it was a good show. In a just world it would have been the Go Betweens. | ||
