The Church have FINALLY cracked the Aria Hall of fame after decades of great albums. I love the Triffids and yet they got the gong before the Church. The triffids were honestly VERY much an underground phenomenon in Auz - they only had Wide Open Road and Bury Me Deep in Love coming close to dinting the charts here and only produced 5 albums, the last of which was, at the time especially(and me still) seen as not on par to the earlier stuff. The Church??? At least 3 top 5 songs here in Auz (Unguarded Moment, Under the Milky Way, Metropolis) and others in the top 40, numerous top 5 albums, critical appraisal (and success: Under the Milky Way and Starfish top 20(?) in America) both here and overseas with NUMEROUS great albums. It just doesn't make sense. Australians (in general) LOVE those who make it big overseas but the general populace shun most things that aren't mainstream (like most places!). The Church were in a weird position. They started off sounding like a mainstream band but increasingly burrowed into the underground, leaving them with no real street cred for the sultans of style in either camp. I guess Kilbey's change from smugness finally wore down down the ney-sayers. Long may they jangle!!!!! |

Since when did the hall of famers prefer the underground over the establishment? |

Stolen Property deserved to be a hit on the charts. Was it ever released as a single? I thought the Church had some very decent albums, but nothing that comes close to Sandy or In The Pines by the Triffids. |

Michael, "Stolen Property" is too long to be a hit. And it builds up too slowly. It is the perfect climactic album track. And I wouldn't put the Triffids and the Church up against each other any more than I would Wire and XTC. |
