Wow, this is awful, awful news. She was far too young, and I wasn't even aware that people in developed countries still died from pneumonia. The Noise Made By People is a truly great album, one of the best of the past decade or so. | ||

normally when reading these "r.i.p" posts we are sad that the person has died, of course, but we can usually be consoled by the fact that blows such as losing the likes of beefheart, chilton,solomon burke,gerry rafferty, (to use recent examples) are softened because we knew that at least they had lived to be a good age. even mick karn, who was younger, wasnt exactly a spring chicken. and at least they died of natural causes, but trish was the victim of circumstance. she was literally in the wrong place at the wrong time. if broadcast hadnt toured singapore and australia she'd be alive now. jeff's right, the noise made by people is an amazing album. | ||

How sad had dollowed it but did not know it was H1NI. We've had loads of flu in the NW and had some severely ill patients with young otherwise healthy people really unwell, we have also had a death from a young patient who was fit and well. tragic loss of life. | ||

have been playing all 3 broadcast albums repeatedly for the last few weeks. surprisingly perhaps, tender buttons is the strongest of the 3 imo. certainly the one with the "hookiest" tunes. | ||

padraig, agreed that with a name like trish keenan she will almost definitely be of irish stock, but there is seemingly no concrete evidence. if i can stereotype for a minute, she has classical irish features and is a stunningly striking girl to look at. there's a neat little obituary for trish in the new mojo. i liked this little insight to her. ".. she wore her influences on her sleeve: californian group the united states of america, czech cinema, library music, electronics, musique concrete, post war film music, whimsical folk, the occult and bizarre childrens programmes" | ||

Word Magazine has a point; concern, shock and grief about someone else's personal trauma pervades our media-saturated world. I think most people were shocked that a young person without AIDS would die of pneumonia in 2011. That makes everyone feel vulnerable and react. I have most of Broadcast's albums and EP's and my daughter was playing one when we had dinner at their place not long ago. People knew the band. I saw them at ATP2001 in Camber Sands and really enjoyed the show. Her death was terribly sad. | ||

I look forward to reading that in the new Word, which will arrive in my letter box in a couple of days. I have thought the mourning for famous dead people was ridiculous for many years. The classic example was when "the people's princess" was killed by a drunk driver in 1997. But even more so, I thought the wailing upon the death of Pope John Paul II in 2005 was way over the top. I saw interviews on TV with teenage girls in England saying how sad it was. There was no mention of them being from the Croydon Catholic Club (or whatever), so I presume they were just picked at random on the street. As only 10% of Britons are Catholic, chances are they were not and had no particular reason to mourn him other than the fact he was a dead famous person. (They did not give off an air of having weighed up the pros and cons of JPII's ecumenical career from a humanitarian perspective). Even a deceased pope was a celebrity to them. |
