Congrats to Jeff!

Make it two for two as I guess I should pipe in with some good news as well. I start a new job in a couple of weeks (after being unemployed for far too many months in the depressed Michigan economy). I stuck a lot of money into my 401K over the years and managed to survive despite having to dip into it from time to time. It's only 17 miles up lined I-75 corridor, and against the traffic both ways! I'll be traveling to China once or twice a year to visit suppliers. I'll try to work in a vacation to Oz on one of the business trips next year if allowed.

Kevin - that's such a good song!

That's great news, Michael, congrats! And getting to travel can be a nice perk. I've known quite a few unemployed/laid-off people over the past couple years, so I can imagine how great it feels to finally find something.

Totally unrelated to anything song of the day: Love - She Comes in Colors

Great news Michael. Well done. Look forward to meeting up with you in Sydney one of the days! I've had several good nights out with both Randy and Austin from these parts when they visited Brisbane and Sydney.

XTC - My Bird Performs. Maybe the most beautiful song they've ever recorded.

Aberfeldy - Tie one on

sweetly melodic melancholy from the excellent Forever young album, just light enough for this strength-sapping heatwave

Mademoiselle K - Pas des carrés

Skinny French black leather guitar chick, sort of young PJH meets a young Chrissie Hynde... maybe more energy and enthusiasm than imagination and great songs at the moment from the little I've seen, but worth a look.

Thanks for this Stuart. I rely upon you to point me to interesting continental music.

Ok, listening to a batch of her numbers on youtube I see what you mean about more energy and enthusiasm than imagination and songs. But I decided to order the current LP anyway. And another Mickey 3d album as well. I like not knowing what the singer is saying.

Stuart, you've set me on a regular Gallic jag here. I've just ordered the two Francoiz Breut albums I didn't have. I think it's time to get the new Keren Ann too. Wish she were still recording in French . . . .

This also follows on yesterday's iPod offering of La Grand Sophie's "Martin." As far as I know she only did one good album but "Martin" kicks it off and it's joyous. I cranked it up loud with the windows down on the car and f%#k these dull Los Angelenos surrounding me!

Well, I probably wouldn't be listening to any of this stuff if you hadn't dropped Alain Bashung's name a while back! That started me off nosing around French music again...(also got me a very warm welcome from the cemetery guard in Pere lachaise when I went to pay my respects - he couldn't believe a Scots bloke had heard of the mighty AB!)

Nata per me - Adriano Celentano

Delving through the wife’s Italian stuff turned up this stunning string-drenched 1961 ballad from Italy’s “answer to Elvis.” Dull video, but what a great arrangement.

The infamous Woodward Cruise starts officially in a couple of hours here locally. I'll do my best to avoid most of it. It wasn't bad back 15 years ago, but it's gone way overboard and too crowded. I saw a way cool 1937 Auburn Speedster a few years back, getting gas at a station on the local highway that leads onto Woodward. I was tempted to follow, but resisted.
