this charming man - the smiths

inspired by my 73 yr old mother.

she asked me today what i was listening to these days, and before i could bore the pants off her she said "i always liked that song you played about having nothing to wear". "morrissey wasn't it?". i said "yeah, when he was in the smiths"

i thought how bizarre that somebody that age was aware of this song, but then i remembered she would have been roughly the same age as i am now when it came out!

have ordered the smiths box set, only a few weeks to go till release. there was an excellent review in word magazine - the guy is absolutely raving about the sound quality of the remastered albums, especially the debut album which going by his description is a revelation. i dont think he's exaggerating too much hopefully, because he starts the review by saying he doesnt buy into the whole remastered bandwagon, and has never bought a remastered album ever.
just as well he got this box set for free then eh!!

King Creosote and Jon Hopkins - John Taylor's Month Away (from the beautiful "Diamond Mine")

Hearing that Fife accent makes me almost homesick for the Auld Country...

But after hearing that the average temperature this summer in the UK was 14 degrees, I'll stay put in SW France. Off to swim in the Dordogne now ...

garden - the fall

i stuck this on after hearing the line "jew on a motorbike" on an episode of curb your enthusiasm, for anybody not familiar with the song mes sings this line several times during the song.

larry was talking to jeff and said "you'll never guess who i saw on a motorbike?"
"portia di rossi?" replied jeff
"no berg, my jewish lawyer" replied larry.
then literally seconds later suzie is arranging some flowers and makes reference to "the fall collection" (as in autumn) - coincidence or is larry a massive fall fan?

turns out larry's lawyer is not jewish after all, even though he acts and speaks like one, and there seemed to be an inference that you couldn't be a jew if you rode a motorbike. i've never heard of this, is this some kind of american humour?

(ps -just shows you, i'd never heard of portia di rossi till allen came up with the info when we were discussing the sonic youth compilation "hits are for squares", and then here she is being referenced in the best sitcoms of all time)

The chills - Pink frost

ok, bit of a no-brainer this one, but every tape compilation I got sent in the 80s had this on it, and now a CD comp has just arrived, and here it is again! (And, yes, When morning comes to town is right there after it!)And how wonderful it still sounds.
