http://www.abc.net.au/news/newsitems/200606/s1655656.htm 'Go Betweens' bridge proposal wins support Brisbane's deputy mayor says he would like to see a new pedestrian bridge in the city centre named after the band, the Go Betweens. A group of high-profile Queenslanders, including authors, musicians and a judge, are hoping to get the Green Bridge named after the iconic 1980s group. The idea has gained momentum since the band's co-founder, Grant McLennan, died last month. But David Hinchliffe says another proposed crossing between Tank Street and the new Gallery of Modern Art (GOMA) might be more suited. "It's the right sort of time, we've got a Goodwill Bridge down the river, up the river we could have a Go Between bridge between GOMA and Roma Street," he said. |

A fine idea and what a great name for a bridge regardless of the tribute aspect! |

If it is possible to build a bridge between the GOMA and a pop culture venue, they'll have it just right. |

It's a pity the Schonell Cinema closes at the end of this month. |

Is that another case of "they tore it down, they pulled it down" Megan? |

Below is further discussion of the bridge from the Brisbane Courier Mail today in a column called "Blogger's View": What to call the Green Bridge? Robyn said: The Go-Betweens certainly have links to the University of Queensland. but would Grant McLennan have liked this bridge? If it was a light walk/cycle bridge, perhaps. However, it's a multimillion- dollar bus bridge to nowhere. It also has punctured the campus atmosphere The Go-Betweens and Nick Earls wrote about in the '80s. The essential question here is: Do you honour anyone by naming a white elephant after them? The Greens and the Queensland Conservation Council denounced the bridge as non-environmental in 2003. So let's have a go at reality: the Ignorance Bus Bridge? The Council Ego Run Amuck Bus Bridge? Odyssey said: The Go-Betweens Bridge is the perfect name for it -- both to honour Grant McLennan and this legendary Brisbane band as well as it being an apt title for a green-friendly travel link, intercommunity connection and local talking point and meeting place. It's about time we started recognising Brisbane musicians and artists that have "built" Brisbane into a city and put it on the international map. Andrew Stafford said: In answer to the question about whether or not Grant McLennan would approve of a bridge dedicated to his and the Go-Betweens' memory: the working party responsible for putting this submission to council (only one of whom is a Courier-Mail journalist put this question to the person best qualified to answer, Grant's best friend and The Go-Betweens co-founder Robert Forster. While Grant would have been saddened by the closure of the Schonell Theatre (and probably disgusted by the introduction of voluntary student unionism, which forced it), Robert felt Grant would have been honoured by this proposal. ggrayggray said: After reading all the suggestions, why not just leave it as the Green Bridge? Steve Bell said: Naming the bridge after such an influential and revered Brisbane act would be a great step towards finally recognising the impact that our city has made on both the national and world scenes. The Go- Betweens Bridge would be an excellent name for a bridge and would in time become an interesting cultural landmark and talking point, something our fair city is crying out for. Green Bridge fan said: I am a great fan of the Green Bridge name. It describes the purpose, the context and the nature of the bridge. I am far from convinced about the need to rename it, especially since it already has such wide recognition among the community of Brisbane. If it must be renamed, there is a clear protocol that it should be named after a person who has greatly contributed to Brisbane, and who is dead.If the community wishes the name of the bridge to recognise a cultural contribution then The Go-Betweens Bridge is not only clumsy and an unfortunate pun but also inconsistent with the majority of the other bridges across the Brisbane River. If you want to recognise The Go-Betweens and, in particular, Grant McLennan, then be direct and suggest that it is named after him. The McLennan Bridge sounds much better than the cheap pun of the alternative. By the way does anyone know whether he even supported the bridge project? I still think the Green Bridge name should stay If not that, then the Reddacliff Bridge has my vote, as it is only fit that a great town planning achievement should recognise a great town planner, the late Trevor Reddacliff. Today's blog news.com.au/couriermail Green or Go-Between or something else? Who should the new bridge be named after? Join the debate on our blog. I dub thee Bridge. |

Typical NME! A month late, and nothing original in their story, which just seems to be a re-write of the Courier-Mail article. Does anyone have any real updates? |

Just come back from a short trip up to Brissie and happened to see the bridge -- not finished yet, the two sides not yet joined, but looking quite grand. ... unfortunately the word from friends in the city is that the Go-Betweens Bridge never even made the shortlist. It's more likely to be called the University Bridge, or, shame and irony, the Schonell Bridge. The Schonell theatre lies at one end of it -- Grant was heavily involved in it as a student as several people have reminisced on this board -- but closed in the past couple of weeks after the Howard Government took the axe to student union finance. Does anyone up there know any more? |

Actually a mural would be good hommage to the great G. I remember a pub in Birmingham that had a painted mural and it was a tribute to all things Brum, it featured Wizard and Roy Wood, ELO, Black Sabbath, Slade, even Apache Indian!!!!!. It sounds crap but if it was done in a modern style it would be great to have the G adorn a wall or the GB's to adorn the wall, if I had a club I'd do it. I once drew a great cartoon of Shane MacGowan for my mates pub in Barnstaple and the punters loved it. Unfortunately someone rubbed him out!! |
