I spend most of my time listening to the Go-Betweens in my car while driving. And questions always pop up while listening to the music that I end up forgetting about. But come back when I heard a line or think about a song. I need a notebook to jot all these questions down so that if I ever meet Robert I could ask him. Luckily, I can also post them here, eh? Kurt, you win jeopardy! or did you just google it before me who was too lazy... Hardin, very funny. One of Robert's classic weird lines. Here's what I found... Now that line makes more sense if he wrote record/concert reviews for an NME-like mag in Sydney. Died Pretty consist of Mark Lock on bass, Frank Brunetti on keyboards, Chris Welsh on drums, Brett Myers on guitar, and Ron Peno on vocals. The roots of the band trace back to two key bands from Brisbane Frank Brunetti had been a rock writer for the Sydney weekly rock magazine RAM (kind of an Aussie version of New Musical Express, except not so obnoxious), and he joined from the ashes of Super K, a bizarre amalgam of ex-superstars and almost-wuz-somebodies whose names grace the covers of records by bands like the Birdmen and Hoodoo Gurus, yet managed only to produce one single of fairly tame pop (which has been reissued on Citadel). | ||

I wonder if Robert had to first get Brunetti's permission to use his name. I've never heard DIed Pretty, just assumed they were some form of semi-metal stadium rock and never checked them out. No idea where I got that impression; maybe the cover art. Were they any good? | ||

I've added the 1983 interview that Frank Brunetti did with the band to my page featuring Edwyn Collins review of 'Cattle and Cane' (from 83 also) http://perso.orange.fr/Vidoni-Kerr/Edwyn_2.htm Grant's comment about the music of the band sums it up neatly for me: "there's a pop element but there's also something indefinably imaginative there which goes outside the boundaries". In an business populated by 2 minute 'heroes' + charlatans we've lost a real original thinker. |
