This from timeoff.com.au

"There will be plenty of memories and even tears of both joy and sadness when Rage airs their Go-Betweens Special Sunday Jun 18 on the ABC from 12.15am. It’s happening in conjunction with Martha Wainwright’s guest program spot, so make sure you have your VCRs properly cleaned as you’ll no doubt want to record and treasures these moments forever."

The playlist for Rage's weekend programs usually appears on their website friday afternoons.

Simply wonderful. I must say tears were welling in the eyes, especially when Streets Of Your Town started. The first clip is special. Hopefully someone in GOB management can contact ABC to get access to the Rock Arena tape.

Don't get too excited…

The Rage special was a bit of a mixed bag (and curiously Robert-heavy given the reason they were running it). The 80s videos you’ll have seen on the reissue CDs and elsewhere. I still think they range from the charming but slight(Spring Rain) to the cringe-inducing (Cattle and Cane). The reunion vids are slightly better but, for me, still don’t add anything to the songs. There’s a heavy strain of nostalgia to them; Surfing Magazines with its sunbleached home movie footage of 70s surfers and beach bums(the band don’t appear at all) and Caroline and I with Robert miming in front of his house, intercut with footage of him from those 80s vids. Going Blind has Bobby and GW larking about in the country an amateur dance troup. Quite amusing and wonderfully disposable.

The Rock Palace stuff is a real curio. It dates from around Tallulah and the band seem oddly underpowered. The draw card, I guess, is Robert and Grant doing an acoustic solo Cattle and Cane, Grant wandering through the audience, mic in hand, as he sings (offkey) and looking, frankly, a little tired and emotional but very beautiful, which I admit I’d never thought of him as before. The oddities are rare outings for Spirit of a Vampyre (which reveals itself to be an even better song with the production sheen stripped away) and Cut it Out, a song I guess I'm the only person in the world to actually like. All in all, a little underwhelming -- sadly, given the scarcity of live footage of the Go-Bs. Oddly, for a live GB’s set, Robert sings four songs to Grant’s two. Perhaps there’s more in the vault?

For me, the revelations of the night were Grant’s 90s videos, if only because I'd never seen them before – two from Jack Frost, two from the Far Out Corporation and one solo for Simone and Perry. Really interesting to see how much money appeared to have been spent on these. JF’s Every Hour God Sends was easily the best thing of the 90 minutes, an epileptic, nausea-inducing black and white attack that really made me listen to the song in a new light. Thought That I Was Over You made me realise how much Steve Kilbey looks like David Brent, dodgy dancing and all. The two FOC vids are just strange – band in corporate uniforms, sci fi storylines (band playing in a penthouse which blasts off while helicopters circle etc). Actually, they’re the sort of thing you see in other people’s videos; the strangeness lies in seeing Grant in them.

Simone and Perry is a concept piece, a magic mirrors affair, and very cleverly done.

Am I being hard-hearted? Sorry to be negative; I only decided to post this since there had been so much interest in the program. I’ll admit I’m not really a music video fan, but the evening really seemed to expose the redundancy of the form. I watched the whole thing indulgently with a beer in hand to toast GW’s every appearance. But for me, it will always, always be the records…

It's a shame that they didn't play any of the videos by Cleopatra Wong, RF's, the remaining clips of Grant's, and 'Your Turn, My Turn.'

I'm of the understanding that there's meant to be a Go-Betweens clip compilation DVD coming out in the near future, so hopefully these videos will appear there.

I just rediscovered a tape of mine with Robert Forster programming Rage from around 1995 or thereabouts. If anyone wants me to write out the list of what he played, let me know. From looking at it briefly yesterday, I have a feeling I may have edited out the clips I didn't want to keep. I may be wrong - it could've just been a short session.
