I really like this message board. Lots of interesting news and views on the Go-Betweens, the wider music scene and the odd stray further afield. Its packed with good information, humour and I have even enjoyed the minor tiffs in the past.

However, just recently I have got fed up with and bored by all of the petty arguements and personal attacks going on and I can't believe I'm the only one who feels this way. Put simply I don't enjoy reading the posts and get nothing from them. Having said that I'm not in favour of censorship and respect everyone's right to post what they want.

So Jonathan, as a suggestion, how about a separate Topic area for those who want to have these rows so the rest of us can just read and contribute to the interesting stuff. Otherwise I think I'm just going to stop looking in.

PS please don't start some massive argument with this - I can't be bothered and won't get drawn in.

IMHO, I think it would helpful if we could agree to start a seperate thread when personal disputes arise (as they inevitibly will - we're human). That way interesting threads don't become ruined by slanging matches.

This could be the start of a message board code of ethics.

All in favour, say 'aye'! :)

C Gull I feel the same as you. This place has seriously degenerated into puerile web-board bickering over the past month or so, and I've been spending significantly less time here as a result. I'd suggest an "off-topic" area too, so people can pursue their puzzling desire to fling feces at each other without tainting the tone of the General section. Even better would be the ability to PM one another, so people could duke it out in private.

I do have just one question to put to this group on this issue.

Apart from asking an anonymous poster (seeking to interrupt my legitimate use of this messageboard in the midst of a debate with another) to "fuck off", what else did I do on that thread to provoke a flame war?

I realise that the major interest of those who conducted those attacks was to have me back down, but here I am. Forthright as ever and so happy to disappoint those predicting my imminent departure.

Those who stood against me have legitimized is the acceptance of censure from any anoymous source on this messageboard.

The debate is not won or lost on the basis of numbers. It is won or lost on the basis of reason. I have no fear.

Having tired of this pointless bickering, I have been inspired to launch my own forum for the more discerning, less egotistical music lover.
All are welcome, if your head doesn't get stuck in the doorway.

Bear in mind it is under construction.
No offence to the admin of this board but variety is the spice of life.

Jeff and C Gull, I feel the same way about this MB. While I still read almost everything posted here, this petty bickering doesn't inspire me to contribute. However, I don't think a seperate topic is neccessary. Rather, there is just a serious lack of things to talk about at the moment. I know this hasn't been a problem in the past, and I like the way the threads go off on elongated tangents; my guess is that the dark cloud that this war of words puts over the whole experience is turning people like myself, former regular contributers, off. We just need to start new threads that hopefully wont be sabotaged by rampant egotism immediately.

Just one small thing, Jerry. It wasn't pointless.

It was I who fought against an 'off-topic' censure and protected a practice that you and all the other old-timers have known and enjoyed on this messageboard since before I arrived.

The fact that I did so single-handedly, I can only attribute to either stupidity, jealousy, apathy, convenance or absence.

We now have the messageboard that those who fought against my objections to the allowance of anonymous censure either wanted us to have or could not foresee.

Sign me on with C Gull, Jeff and Pete. If a separate boxing ring topic is not possible, I suggest the very simple practice of everybody treating the argumentative posts as if they simply were not on here. Ignore them. Totally.

Jonathan Thanks for listening.

Everyone else - thanks for your support.

Michael - I'll stick on here for a while - never really got into TFC though quite like Howdy.

I, too, have given up contributing (some time ago) due to the way the Board was going, although I do look in from time to time to catch up on the latest news.

It's all very sad. Some people really do need to get a life.
