REM?
Sonic Youth?
Guided by Voices?
Pixies?
American Music Club?
Nirvana?
Afghan Whigs?
Husker Du?
Replacements?
Drive By Truckers?

or your own choice?

I would go for REM, if they had split after Reckoning. They didnt, so therefore I wil go for Pixies.
Tunes, lyrics, rage, angst - its what rock music is all about, right?

it is much easier to answer the uk act question than the us act one.

maybe it could be captain beefheart and the magic band. but not because of trout mask replica. weird, but lovely. similar to the fall a long time companion. both with interruptions in the nineties where i strayed, somewhere.

Kevin, your list is lacking anything pre-1980's IMHO.

Bob Dylan
Velvet Underground
Patti Smith(Group)
Television
Blondie
Talking Heads
The Byrds
Pere Ubu

R.E.M. are a good bet for longevity. Even the iffy albums (Life's Rich Pageant/Document/Green) have some great moments. Talking Heads would have to be my faves just for the 1st 4 albums in 4 years then 2 mind-blowing live albums & Speaking In Tongues is also a bit special.

Jerry,
Bob Dylan ,Velvet Underground ,Television, Talking Heads and The Byrds are well worthy of inclusion. My list did not deliberately leave anything pre 80s off, I just listed the bands I did off the top of my head and hoped that by lazily stating "or your own choice" people like your good self would fill in the gaps
And you did :-)

Since we are doing BANDS and not artists, I would suggest that this rules out Uncle Bob, much as I would love to include him!!

My list:

Byrds
R.E.M.
Monkees (Don't forget Grants favourite song...)
Beach Boys
Devo (!)
