Depends if Krautrock means any German band, or the ones lumped into that "movement." Of the latter, I'd pick Can. If the former, maybe the Notwist.

padraig, kraftwerk were krautrock surely at their beginning. later as they made their masterpiece 'trans europa express' i think you can'tcount it to that movement anymore.

i am too young to say that i was around at the first time when krautrock started, but in the midst of the seventies nearly all the bands were active and as i was interested in pop/rock music i discovered those bands fast (not all).

tangerine dream, klaus schulze, can, neu, la düsseldorf, cluster, michael rother, amon düül, kraftwerk, jane , eloy, ramses, guru guru were on my playlists.

faust, popol vuh, witthüser & westrupp and ash ra tempel i discovered later.

not all of the works of the a.m. bands are great. and surely you can say that a lot of that music is overrated, too.

in retrospect i have to say that neu, cluster + harmonia are my favourite bands of that krautrock thing.

favourite albums are:

amon düül - phallus dei
popol vuh- einsjäger und siebenjäger
cluster - zuckerzeit and sowieso
neu - neu!
tangerine dream - electronic meditation
la düsseldorf - first
ash ra tempel -first
can - monster novie
harmonia - musik von harmonia and deluxe

I've got only the music of 'Aguirre' (Popol Vuh) which is perfect for the film.

But Krautmusic is boring music no ?

I was listening to Kraftwerk while travelling on the Deutche Bahn trains in Germany a few weeks ago and it sounded incredible; like listening to The Triffids while travelling round Australia or The Bats in New Zealand.
