Has anyone seen this film? I saw it last night in the cinema and loved it. It was very moving and did not shy away from showing up the sometimes very nasty repercussions - for him and others - of his mental illness.

I loved the part where a friend of his, Kathy McCarty, compared what Johnston did to his former manager to Woody Allen's film Broadway Danny Rose. I love BDR! It's the only Woody Allen film I have on DVD. And fair play to Allen for allowing them to show clips of BDR in The Devil and Daniel Johnston.

For those of you in Sydney, The Devil and Daniel Johnston is only showing at the Chauvel on Oxford St, Paddington. It's the former AFI cinema and is vastly improved since re-opening.

Yes Padraig I saw it at a documentary festival in Dublin about 6 months, an incredible film. It was also showing here again a few months back. You don't know whether to laugh or cry at times. I'm a huge fan of Daniel Johnston and nobody writes like he does.

If you are interested in getting some of his music I'd recommewnd his very first 'release' "Songs of pain" & "More Songs of pain". There's also a current CD out as an introduction to his stuff called "Welcome to my world" which might be a good place to start and there's also another one where loads of different artists cover some of his tracks and the second CD is the Daniel Johnston origianls, it's called "Discovered Covered: The Late Great Daniel JOhnston", though of course he's not dead. An excellent recent album is 2004's "Fear Yourself", acollaboration with mark Linkous of Sparklehorse and that is a great album.

Thanks for all the info XY765. I bought
Discovered Covered about 18 months ago and love the Daniel Johnston disc. I listened to it on the iPod after seeing the film the other night. I still have not played the disc of others doing his songs though. Must dig it out.
