Following on from my "tombstone" comment in the humour discussion, some more Go-Betweens/Death connections have popped into my twisted mind.... HE LIVES MY LIFE - For those who believe in Reincarnation FINGERS (Grant) - Those who opt for cremation ("hey, you, watch me fall through your fingers") any others, or am I the only sick puppy out there??? | ||

Catherine, I love He LIves My Life, because I used to have a 4WD and regularly went to double island point and fancied myself as RF's double, ironically he now lives in Brisbane and I don't, the Irish joint phenomenon has taken over Brisbane since Dooley's was the only Irish bar in town, and now we have Gilhooleys, Hooligans, and numerous others, which is why it is such a cool comment on where I might have met my girl, but I met her in Hobart. Not sure about the death connection, maybe that's why I left town. | ||

come to think of it RF is always going on about double lives. I think TWO HEADS is a very funny song. Sorry not much on death. Well I did just think of the obvious one - When People are Dead, which I also find quite funny. Especialy the unusual chord change (yep, I think that's funny too), at the end of the verse which summons up the funeral mood. | ||

Michael, it was more the title that struck me for the reincarnation crack, as opposed to the whole lyric. I think that when I croak, if the re-incarnated me has a better time than I’m having, I'll be rightly p*ssed off!!! (or maybe not, cos it'll be me - hmmm - must navel gaze about this - easy to tell it's friday - I'm rambling). Love the whole idea of “living” incidents from songs. The first tune I played in my first car was, of course, Spring Rain. Every time I hear it, I still get a stab of nostalgia for a certain rust-bucket Renault 5 called Declan... Problem is, I also lived “Right Here”. That line “I know you’re 32 but you look 55” gave me a wakeup call that maybe I should cut down on the partying just a little... Maybe some day I’ll get to Brisbane, hire a 4x4 and live his life, even if it’s for an hour or two. | ||

i once did the whole 4x4 from brisbane to fraser island jaunt. double island point and rainbow beach are stunning. noosa, though v. touristy, is good for a piss up along the way. | ||

On the car story Catherine, I used to have an old white valiant 1969 model, before the 4WD and when spring rain came on the radio I used to put the elbow out in the breeze. Never had a name for the old beast. How's Declan these days, my old car had a habit of rolling down hills when I'd leave it parked, I'd find it in someone elses yard or on top of a tree it had uprooted, sometimes I would catch it doing the runaway and jump in and stop it. I got 50 dollars for it at the wreckers. Also, no tape player in the car, just the radio but it was uncanny, one guy I know used to get in the car about once a month and every time he got in the radio station would play a Smiths song, freakish? Right Here - 32 but look like 55, always sounded like they'd been listening to Lloyd Cole, but I suppose they'd both got that sort of stuff from bob dylan | ||

Poor Declan didn't pass the National Car Test eighteen months ago, and was put out to pasture. Gave him to my mechanic for parts. His dog used to sleep in the car, before poor Declan was finally squished. Glad I wasn't around for that. A decidedly un-glamourous Fiat Uno is the current mode of transport. But I know I'll miss him when he's gone too. I still put my elbow out in the breeze when I listen to spring rain, to the extent that my right arm is noticeably more tanned than my left. Lloyd Cole have another great car-related song - 2CV - since I first heard that song, I wanted one of those cars, so I could pretend that Lloyd wrote the song about me. (Well I was 14...) Which Smiths song was it - "I started something" maybe??? | ||

On this theme I'd like to say There is a Light That Never Goes Out (driving in your car, i never never want to go home,....if a ten tonne truck crashes into us...etc), but it was prior to that release and it varied between What Difference Does it Make and Bigmouth Strikes again eras | ||

"There is a light" would have been an apt song the other night. Had been visiting my folks, and half way home, stopping for petrol, I realised the rear lights were not working. Damn scary 30 mile journey. Even more apt would have been Will Oldham's "I see a darkness" |
