The following Jack Marx gem on the 50 worst Australian band names of all time appeared in yesterday's Sydney Morning Herald on-line.

http://blogs.smh.com.au/thedailytruth/archives/2006/08/worst_band_name.html

A comprehensive list. But I can think of a couple of other Aussie shockers that should have made the cut including 'Chocolate Starfish' and of course Russel Crowe's '30 Odd Foot of Grunts'.

Any other suggestions - either Australian or international?

Agoraphobic Nosebleed - their "music", what snippets I've heard, makes Metal Machine Music sound like Bach

Ebola Soup - from San Francisco

Girl Scout Heroin - from Baton Rouge

I don't think in this day and age there are 'Worst band names' as such as really anything goes now doesn't it?
However I used to detest these groups in the early 90's with names like Good Question Derek for instance who were trying to be funny and failing miserabley.

Bowlfish.

Kingmaker.

Both were terrible bands. We forgive rubbish names if we like the band. Ned's Atomic Dustbin is dreadful name, but I liked them for a while and they were pretty good live.

Killing Heidi. A name almost as bad as their vile MOR-masquerading-as-something-wild music.

That's a great article by Jack Marx.

I want to form a ska/metal band called Skadaver.

There really is a New Jersey band called Skanatra (www.skanatra.com) who play - you've guessed it - Frank Sinatra songs in a ska style.

A friend saw them in their hometown of Hoboken and said they were great live.

That IS a terrible name, Jerry. Isn't that a type of melon? Wait, that's 'casaba'....but still, they suck!

Jerry, are they named after Linda Kasabian, who was one of Charles Manson's girls?

Going way back, I though Iron Butterfly was a stupid name for a rock band.

Toad the Wet Sprocket

Supposedly a Monty Python thing (I don't remember it), but just an awful self-consciously "wacky" name for a derviative, uninteresting band.

Someone once told me about a west coast punk act called Bring Me the Head of Jerry Garcia. Genius name I thought.

But I googled it today and looks like it's the name of an album, not a band.

Still genius though!

System of a Down...portentous sounding moniker there dudes, but far as I can tell, completely meaningless...their having their hearts in the right place, politically, unfortunately in no way makes up for their awful, unlistenable music.

Multi-word names are almost always a mistake. Keep it simple. If we didn't like their music, who would regard a band named Creedence Clearwater Revival? Unfortunately, their previous one-word moniker didn't work too well either: Golliwogs.

A somewhat bland name seems the best if you are going to live with it for a long time. I wish the Plug Uglies had kept going but their name would have become pretty incongruous as they aged, not because it was inaccurate but because it would lack the appropriate gravitas. There's a similar problem with Sonic Youth. Whereas for sheer usability through the aging process The Winnebago Orchestra cannot be beat!

I object to pseudo band names for solo artists, i.e., Bright Eyes, Iron and Wine and--some might say--the Apartments.

I've never heard Kula Shaker. But I like the name. And if Kasabian is named after a Manson family member, well you can't go wrong with that.

If I could enact my latest silly fantasy, I'd flee Imperial Rome for Tasmania and form a band called Launceston Chamberpot that would feature a string quartet but never play anywhere but a pub as a matter of principle. Sort of punk in reverse. But that name suffers from the same tediousness as Creedence Clearwater Revival.

I confess I like the name Candy Harlots.
