Geez, Padraig, you're right--how did I leave "Spring Rain" off my list? Simply the most exhilarating song in the band's catalog.

Core of a flame alwyas excited me too, it was alwys a track I thought if I were in the Go Betweens it would be along with I just get caught out that I would get the most thrill out of.
I think Vickers bass did a lot for me as both of these are the MkII.

Songs that make my pulse race and heart quicken? Usually it's the most poignant songs, not necessarily the up-tempo numbers. To limit them to five (I've squeezed in a sixth) seems almost an affront to the McLennan/Forster catalog because it brims with poignancy. One of the tests of music as art vs. entertainment for me is durability; and the depth, simplicity and inventiveness of the Go-Betweens lyrics, melodies and arrangements have grown on me with each decade. As I grow as a human being I still feel like I am playing "catch up" with the Go-Betweens music.

Bachelor Kisses
Cattle & Cane
A Bad Debt Follows You
Bye Bye Pride
He Lives My Life
When People are Dead

I love the way, on the Live in London version of "Core of a Flame", the two of them shout the word "dirt" with such gusto...it's a fairly pulse-quickening moment and you feel, that at that precise moment, they are completely channeling the two art-crazy drama students they were, all those years ago, plotting their futures in Robert's bedroom. Or, maybe that quality, that spirit, never left them...

Must admit "exciting" is not a word I associate with The Go-Betweens, and thank God for that because they feed my other musical needs.

Some that may qualify

Man O Sand.....
Here Comes A City
A Bad Debt Follows You
Spring Rain.

Any Go-Betweens track that's not in 4/4 tends to be quite exciting.

I'm not very good at identifying time signatures, but is there anything on TFORW, BYBO, or OA that's not in 4/4? (Not that I'm saying they're boring.) With Lindy went the "odd" rhythms, I think.
