..and that is where they belong. You may have noticed that the (12w) VP-16 is a fully integrated amplifier that utilizes two Chinese military version 6SL7 (metal based) tubes for preamp and drive stages. These tubes will accept a wide range of pre/line stage signal level input without problem and are legendary for both their reliability and their stability under heavy load. (also, they are relatively cheap to replace!) This alows the (15w) SL-2000A tube linestage preamp to act as either a dedicated preamp for the solid state (ss) subwoofer amp or as an input to the VP-16's 6SL7 tubes, safely doubling its output. I also use a Lux TT/Grado and Dynaudio Accoustics bridge monitors augmented by (the very highly regarded) australian made Accusound subie (with built-in 100Wss amp & limiter.) Digital recording is achieved via a M-Audio 2496 running SoundForge software and XP drivers. It is a very flexable system. At least 3 configurations are possible, each with its own advantages. For vinyl listening: TT®Phono Pre®SL-2000A®split: VP-16®bridge monitors 100Wss Subie Amp®Accusound Subie. For vinyl transcription: TT®Phono Pre®(in)M-Audio 2496(out)®SL-2000A®split (as before) for monitoring of recording. For party mode, where extra bass response is expected, I replace the Accusound with a single 14" kevlar driver inside B&W boxes and driven by a dedicated 300W, high current (Les Ferdinands built) mono ss amp. kicks arse; regularly. |
