Hi, does anyone else on this mb listen to the chills ? To my eternal shame, I only got my first cd by them a couple of weeks ago (submarine bells) and its been on constant rotation ever since - soft bomb came today so I'll have a bit of variety for a while ! I remember seeing the video for 'Heavenly Pop Hit' on No Disco (Irish music show) maybe 10 years ago and thinking 'gee New Zealand really does look the image of Ireland'..today I read it was filmed in Donegal ! :-)

Oh sure, you'll find plenty of Chills love on this board, especially for "Submarine Bells" and "Soft Bomb," both of which popped up on some "favorite albums" threads we've done in the past.

Another big Chills fan here..."Submarine Bells" is one of my most played albums ever...never fails to bring me joy (despite the semi-bleak nature of some of the lyrics). Second favorite is "Brave Words," which I'm on the hunt for...lost my copy and then discovered it's out of print and going for almost $100 American.

Late today Kevin! I always take my daughter to swimming on Saturday mornings anyway!

Yes, I'm a big Chills fan. Soft Bomb is my favourite ever album. Here's a review I did of their box set in The Irish Times a few years ago. It's also posted on The Chills' site (by them, not me).

The Chills ****
Secret Box
Definitive Music (only available through softbomb.com)
This three-CD compilation of rarities is a godsend to those of us who regard Martin Phillips as a songwriter on par with The Go-Betweens and his fellow-Kiwi Neil Finn. Some of the early live recordings are rough, but no less wonderful for that. Balancing, a seven minute psychedelic trip, is particularly great. There are also radio sessions, jingles, b-sides, covers and outtakes. The Soft Bomb demos show the route to that album’s creative highpoint. Phillips deserves to be rescued from obscurity and hailed as the genius he is. If you care about the craft of writing brilliant songs, you need this album. www.softbomb.com

Another thumbs-up for the Chills from this quarter! Think I prefer the early stuff + still waiting for that remixed 'Brave Words': a magnificient album not served well by its muddy (that is being polite) production. Did you have a CD of 'Brave Words' Allen? I still listen to my vinyl copy. I liked the fact that when I got 'Secret Box' the customs declaration slip was filled in by Martin Phillips himself. They were great live too when I saw them in Edinburgh years ago...

I started with a cassette copy, then got the CD (which had two good extra songs, oddly placed right between side one and two of the tape [and I'm assuming the vinyl] sequencing). I miss it. I also missed them the one time that I know they turned up in Seattle, around the time of "Sunburnt." Apparently it in a small, intimate, semi-acoustic show at which many local musicians showed up, including Peter Buck.

Thanks for the link Padraig. I ordered a copy of "Stand By." It's so nice to be able to send the money directly to the artist.

For a moment it looked like I'd be able to buy a copy of "Sunburnt" from Rocking Horse Records (via Amazon Marketplace) but, sadly, this morning received the message that they'd sold it. I have to settle for a prosaic New Jersey source instead.

The Chills are another excellent Padraig/Jeff W (I think) recommendation. I wish I'd known about them when Secret Box was still available.

Allen, go to Netsounds.com or GEMM.com and you can do a search for Brave Words and find several copies on vinyl for reasonable prices. CD, now thats a different matter, Ł44 was the cheapest I think and that was at Amazon UK.

Speaking of the Chills, I found a comparatively cheap copy of "Kaleidoscope World" available from a NZ retailer on eBay and ordered it. Very eagerly awaiting its arrival... Next, I try to track down "Brave Words." It's hard to believe the Chills albums were ever released in the States; try to find one anywhere now...I've searched used bins everywhere.

Kurt, what does that say about the quality of the Chills albums? Used bins are full of Keane, Coldplay, the last 3 REM albums, Kid A (what phillistines would get rid of that), Oasis, Blur etc.
People who buy Chills albums are not likely to bin them.

Thanks, Hugh. And Kevin, you're right...anyone smart enough to buy a Chills album is smart enough to hang on to it. I have to say, though, that I feel personally offended when I see a Go-Betweens album in the used bin. Doesn't happen too much, fortunately.

Thanks muchly for the tip Kevin...and I can definitely agree with your assessment of Chills albums in used bins. In fact, the last one I saw there was my aforementioned CD. Without going into too much detail (because I'm still in the process of kicking myself), I'll just say that through my own stupidity the contents of a storage locker I had got auctioned off. Among the other things inside was a goodly number of records and CDs, including nearly all my Chills.

To add to the heartbreak, not long ago I went into a used CD store 60 miles away and within 5 minutes of browsing the New Acquistions bin it was clear I was looking at my own stuff. And there was "Brave Words." The price: $85.00. I asked to be sure, and the lady behind the counter said, yeah, that's a pretty conservative pricing...

Speaking of "Brave Words," I've been listening to the copy of "Secret Box" Andrew sent me. Many thanks again, Andrew. It seems to include a huge proportion of "Brave Words" perhaps remixed. "Wet Blanket" is such a fantastically great song!

Here's a potentially dense-sounding post if my question has been posed and answered before.

Under another chat subject, someone pointed out that the last howevermany Chills albums had S-B titles. Submarine Bells, Soft Bomb, Sunburnt, Stand By. Despite my Chills jones, I never noticed it.

So what's up with it? Cute affectation or nefarious plot? Martin P. ever address it?

I had never noticed it either until I saw it pointed out there! I'm sure it's intentional, just like the Go-Betweens with their two ls in every title (until Rachel Worth let the side down with only one l).

Yeah, well, don't spend too much time noticing it. How many "L's" are there in "Oceans Apart?"

The Chills' SB thing was amusing to me because I hadn't noticed it even when I was just in the act of getting "Stand By," "Sunburnt" and "Sketchbook." And then, of course, there was "Secret Box" with its various individual disc subtitles also carrying forward the SB theme.

I think the S-B thing slips by because the titles sound so natural. I mean, "Secret Box" is a pretty good name for a collection of rarities. It's a pretty sly conceit, or I'm especially unobservant.

What's "Sketchbook," Randy? Haven't heard of that.

Sketchbook is actually a Martin Phillips release. It is a collection of his personal home demos issued by FN in 1999. Padraig has commented that it is too "sketchy" though I wonder if he still agrees with that assessment after going back and listening again. I think it's quite impressive. Everything is multitracked; it's not so stark as to be one voice and one instrument and remember Martin is a good multi-instrumentalist a bit like our Spence.

It has the songwriting demo version of "Secret Garden" (from Sunburnt) and two other songs, "February" and "Bad Dancer" would surface on "Stand By," but I believe the rest is unique. Consider this: it's just the cream of the enormous crop of Martin Phillips' song ideas from a period when the Chills had only released a single album ("Sunburnt") and that was three years earlier. There are some standouts on here, from the wonderfully insightful "Evadene"--which I wish he'd recorded officially with the band because it is so strong--to his gripping story of a social outcast's mother's love ("Carabela"), from his sprightly enviro-warning "No More Tigers" to the almost "Streets of Your Town"-ish and thoroughly lovely "Small Spark" to the kooky "Witch's Hat" to the hymnlike closer "Hawea." It's a really nice demonstration of his constant outflow of great song ideas and also good arrangement ideas.

I think "Sketchbook" is essential.

"Sketchbook" is charming--I'm lucky to have a former coworker who sent me the MP3s of the album. I need to put them on a disc or find some space on my iPod Nano, because I haven't heard them in awhile. Some of Martin's instrumentation and arrangements on the home recordings are quite surprising. There are probably a couple of good Chills albums in there if he'd ever gotten around to recording them with a full band.

Listening to Sketch Book right now. Much better than I'd remembered and not so sktchy after all. Carabela is an astonishing song. I could imagine Nick Cave doing it.

Does anyone here own a CD copy of Brave Words? I'm just wondering whether it's been remixed, as I remember reading that Mr Phillipps was unhappy with Mayo Thompson's production of the album.

Each time I see it on Ebay, the price tag is always larger than my curiosity.

I always found the cassette version quite muddy and I thought it was because I played it to death. When I upgraded to a vinyl copy, it sounded much the same.

If someone could stop and help me with my quandry, then that'd be great. If I could somehow get a burn of the album, that'd be even better.

Cheers.

I think we have enough Chills fans here to start a movement to get all the band's out of print/hard to find releases reissued and remastered with bonus cuts. I believe Hugh mentioned to me that Warners or someone bought the Flying Nun catalog. Time for an emailing campaign? If it can happen for the Triffids, why not the Chills?

Also, is Martin Phillipps a semi-accessible figure to fans? I see a P.O. box in NZ to write to on softbomb.com, but it doesn't look like he receives email directly. His posts on the website are quite old. I wonder what his position on reissuing the old albums is.

Kurt, as I understand it, Flying Nun was purchased by Festival/Mushroom Records of Australia in the 1990's who in turn were purchased by Warner in 2005. I am not sure if Warner will have any interest in re-releasing the Flying Nun back catalogue as such but Rhino Records and in particular Rhino Handmade ( subsidiary of Warner ) might be the ideal company to re-release the early albums by The Chills plus the Secret Box material. They have released a number of wonderful individually numbered limited edition box sets spread across three, four, five and six discs ( Jimmy Webb; Beau Brummels; The Rascals; John Sebastian etc.) The Jimmy Webb box set was limited to 2500 copies and was a five disc set. It was made up of the five albums he recorded for Reprise during the 1970's along with a previously unreleased live performance from 1972 and a disc's worth a previously unreleased outtakes recorded in the 1970's. It sold out within months. The larger sets usually retail for around US$80 so they are not exactly cheap but they invariably have excellent sound quality and overall they are superb packages.

Kurt, I forgot to add that RhinoHandmade have a Suggestion Box on their website where they encourage you to tell them about a product you think they should create and why you think folks might want to buy it. I have no idea if they actually act on any of these suggestions.

I don't think there's a huge fan-base for the Chills, particularly in Australia. They last toured here in 1992 and since then, all I've seen or heard is copies of Soft Bomb and Submarine Bells sitting in bargain bins. Their Flying Nun-era stuff doesn't fetch a large premium either.

The Chills are one of those bands where you're either a die-hard fan or you've never heard of them before. That could well apply to every other Flying Nun band of the Chills's era.

But yes, it'd be great to see it all remastered and reissued... just can't see a huge audience out there.

True, Donat...but the Go-Betweens catalog has been reissued twice now, and they never sold anything--especially in the States. I'd hazard a guess that the Chills' "Submarine Bells" and "Soft Bomb" both sold more in the States than any individual Go-Betweens album. I could be way, way wrong...but they got more college/FM radio play here than the Go-Betweens, so I'm guessing they sold more too.

The Go-Betweens reissues came out a few months ago with almost no press coverage - same with Ed Kuepper's recent solo and Laughing Clowns retrospectives. It's quite strange, really.

If only someone could film Robert Forster jumping on his bed, singing along to one of his songs playing in the background. You could then place the video up on Youtube and perhaps people would care.

He might get 2 million hits - much like that group 'The Sick Puppies' who have a clip of a guy walking around Sydney, and holding a 'Free Hugs' sign. The song is no better than the band's name, I must say.

I got this from Martin Phillips today:

Welcome to the Chills newsletter, Softbomb. You've said you wouldn't mind getting email about Dunedin music or the Chills. If you want stay on this list, please visit this URL now:

http://scripts.dreamhost.com/add_list.cgi?g=JPCw4JoIsXUBG

SCENE: Select locations - around the globe.

SOFT-BOMBER ONE: Say! Listen! What's goin' on?

SOFT-BOMBER TWO: What! I don't hear nuthin'!

SOFT-BOMBER ONE: That's just it! It's quiet!

SOFT-BOMBER TWO: TOO quiet!

SOFT-BOMBER ONE: ...and that usually means...

BOTH: DANGER!!...

...but, dear softbombers, in this case it means quiet DETERMINATION!

This is Martin Phillipps, leader of The Chills, re-connecting just when some of you were beginning to give us up for lost!

Well - it's O.K.!

I didn't want to have nothing to report, or only just the set-backs, so I waited and we all worked and things are starting to fall nicely into place.

(You heard it before?) Perhaps..

...but WE'RE feeling very good and ready to move!

Here are some juicy News McNuggets...

1: Well, you all knew that bassist Rodney Haworth left back aways to fulfill family duties etc and he is keeping his rock abilities finely honed performing often with local punk outfit, Infinite Justice...(We caught up yesterday and I'm sure he would have sent his love if we'd known I'd be doing this).

...and I'm sure that MOST of you knew that keyboardist James Dickson decided to pick up the bass vacancy as he wanted to be able to stretch his legs on the stage a little... (he was then, and still is playing bass or keyboards or whatever in bands TOO numerous to mention - I'll ask him at practice tonight if he sends his

Love)...but FEW of you knew, until now, that we have found a wonderful replacement keyboardist in the delightful personage of one ERICA STICHBURY.

Spotted by James performing with her boyfriend in their local semi-covers band, Jose Jones, she was quietly assessed AND THEN SWIPED in that age-old loveable Chills' tradition! She plays excellent keys and really gutsy guitar and virtuoso violin and sings well, looks lovely and happy - and she recently threw herself into a massive bar room brawl in aid of her boyfriend! So WATCH OUT!

2: If in New Zealand you can now download the "Stand By..." E.P. at WWW.TXTTUNES.COM and we are looking into making a whole lot more of our material, including much unreleased stuff, available through this medium as soon as some copyright ownership details are cleared up.

3: There is a Martin Phillipps/Chills site on WWW.MYSPACE.COM in N.Z. which will be worked on and updated as regularly as possible as it looks like we are on the verge of acquiring a new computer technical kind of person/thing...

(I know NOTHING of all theees, uh, how-you-say?, comb-pooter?) ...but this is because, [MUSIC SOFTENS, LIGHTS DARKEN] it is my sad duty to inform you all that longtime Chills' softbomb web-site coordinator and loyal, supportive friend, Andy Holt, has decided to move on as his world has taken all sorts of interesting twists and turns since he first approached me about the possibility of a Chills' site about TEN YEARS AGO!

I know you will agree with me that without his patience and critical eye (and appreciated EAR as well!) very few of you would have known ANYTHING about the very ongoing existence of The Chills.

We wish you well Andy and Helen and we will of course keep in touch so that you will be amongst the VERY first to know when all this dedication from the small hard-core unit that The Chills family is, finally pays off!

4: OK! Right, there will shortly be announced some pre-Christmas gigs in New Zealand only - (sorry overseas folks; but we are certainly on a better footing than we've been in a long time to be seriously looking at a couple of months in Europe and the U.S. - more on that a.s.a.p.!

5: We found EXCELLENT new practice rooms! So what! SO WHAT!?! YOU bloody well try finding one!

6: Flying Nun Records' 25th anniversary is next year and we understand that various plans are underway as they settle into a snuggly new bed with Warner Brothers. Again - more on that as soon as we hear it.

7: We admit some degree of fault in the lack of wham-bam surprise with the new web site which was a rush job but, seriously, if you think you can do better then we DO want to hear from you.

Any incredibly talented person willing to do lots of amazing work for little or no financial reward except for the thrill of contributing to the success of one of your favourite bands and having your quality work seen by thousands of anxious talent-seekers, the whole world over!

[Please make contact through the site - AND some DIGITAL PERFORMER 3 expert prepared to play teacher/engineer for me for the same amazing deal!]

8: There are new forums starting on the new site immediately and all sorts of stuff happening as it is happening! Erica has brought more to the band than just her talent. She also has the missing link in the chemistry that we have been seeking and we are READY TO CONQUER!

Stay Chilled!

We LURVE you!

Martin Phillipps, The Chills,

Dunedin (beautiful sunny day today - the 24th of October, 2006) Aotearoa New Zealand.

Sounds like his batteries have been well and truly recharged and ready for a Chills renaissance.
Listening to Sunburnt for the first time today(the 3 CD Chills package finally arrived from NZ on Friday :-) ), sounds pretty good on first listen. I'm still in Padraigs camp though, I think Soft Bomb is the one.

I've heard there have been an awful lot of false starts for Phillipps with the "Chills renaissance"--let's hope it's for real this time.

And speaking of the Chills, I'm very happy because my CD of "Kaleidoscope World" just arrived in the mail from NZ.

Listening to Submarine Bells just now, must admit it runs Soft Bomb close. I have got Heavenly Pop Hits on constant rotation in the car CD player so its Chills all the way for me just now.

I don't know why it took me so long to order Soft Bomb when I have had Submarine Bells for over 10 years, but I finally ordered it today. Heavenly Pop Hits will be sure to follow it's way to my house.

I got a CD copy of Brave Words from a fellow board member (cheers) and by jove the sound quality is ridiculously murky - more so than my very worn out tape and LP.

The House Of 100 Rooms material that's on the CD sounds fine though.

Martin should really pull his finger out and remaster it.

Thanks for sharing that Padraig. And thanks for reviving this thread Donat. I hadn't checked it out after getting back.

My most recent Chills acquisition is "Kaleidoscope World" awaiting me upon my return. I'm still absorbing it, having only heard it all the way through two times. It's nice to have "Pink Frost" and not have to go listen to the scratchy video on YouTube.

I listened to "Sunburnt" about three times during my trip. I like the album a lot. I suppose that I prefer things stripped down a bit and that's why it appeals so much and why "Sketchbook" is no problem for me. But "Sunburnt" is probably more appropriately a Martin Phillips solo album.

Donat, remastering costs money. Maybe Martin simply doesn't have it or an angel to cough it up. And, worse yet, maybe his reference to copyright issues means he doesn't really have legal access to "Brave Words."

Martin Phillips is stony broke, living on welfare. A couple of years ago he was found guilty and fined for shoplifting a block of cheese and a banana drink. He'd been caught shoplifting before too. He seemed a lot more sorry he's been caught than that he'd done it. I wouldn't hold your breath for any Chills remastering jobs.

That's really depressing Padraig. It makes me wish we could put together a Martin Phillips Foundation or something.

To paraphrase Rick James, "heroin is a hell of a drug."

One thing I don't get, why have there been so many line-up changes in the Chills?

I just ordered the Best of the Chills for €1.62 from Play.com fairtrade, apparently new copy. Less than ther cost of half a pint of Guinness!

My thought on that Donat is that not all that many people are interested in sticking around for a long time in a band that is so thoroughly the creature of one singer/songwriter which is what Martin Phillips is. I think most musicians will ultimately want to move on to something where they have more creative input.

And maybe it also has something to do with the economics of playing in a band in a small place like NZ. Maybe it's just really hard to make a living.

That's less that a third the cost of a pint of plain isn't it? I know I paid 4.80 euro in 2002 for a pint in Temple Bar. Surely it's gone nowhere but up since then?

As for line-up changes; yes, I assume it's because there is only so much commitment you can give when you're getting little or no money for what you do.

Phillipps talking about the Chills Brave Words album...

"Seven years toward that album and we lost control of it." he mourns. "It was mainly due to finance. Most of the problems could have been tackled with two more weeks in the studio.
"And then fate reared its ugly head. Something went wrong in the cutting process, making the record quieter. The sound just got lost in this mushy noise. It's like listening to a record in the next room rather than something right in front of you."

Opening another beer, looking a little forlorn at the thought of Brave Words. Phillipps brightens at the prospect of remixing the album. -It's something I'd like to do in the future. Remix the masters and re-release it as Braver Words. It was a much better record than actually came out."

Yeah Padraig you can pay over €5 for a pint in town in some trendy late bars. I tend to end up in ould lad bars a lot. My local (Drimnagh) is €3.60 which ain't bad at all.

Wow, €3.60 is pretty good. That's country prices. I ought to drink in Drimnagh more often. The price of a pint varies so much from place to place in Ireland. A few times when I lived in Dublin I walked out of places because the price was too expensive.
