Anyone going to the 2006 Valley Fiesta’s tribute to Grant on Sunday in Brisbane? It should be a good show, with Dave from Custard performing along with novelist (well, I know him as a novelist anyway) Nick Earls. Please give us a report if you are able to go! Austin -------------------------- From the Brisbane Courier – Mail today: BRISBANE'S cradle of live entertainment will be pumping this weekend, with the 2006 Valley Fiesta expected to draw more than 70,000 people over three days. Free shows from top calibre local and interstate acts will be at the epicentre of the action on the Brunswick Street Mall's Nightlink Stage and the Chinatown Stage. Topping the bill on Friday night will be BrisVegas luminaries Regurgitator and notorious crowd-shakers 2 Dogs, while Saturday's drawcards include TNT (the explosive combo of Tim Rogers and Tex Perkins) and live legends The Bird. Sunday's finale will see a tribute to the late Grant McLennan of The Go-Betweens featuring Nick Earls, Guy Webster and Dave McCormack. Also taking the mall stages alongside dozens of other acts throughout the weekend will be Brazilian dancers, tribal drummers, burlesque performers, drag divas, ballroom dancers, indigenous dancers and the Flipside Circus. Where the mall shows leave off each night at 10.30pm, more than 30 venues across the Valley will take over until the wee hours with bands, DJs and performers of every stripe, from cabaret to drum 'n' bass to snake dancers. I managed to attend the Valley Fiesta this year. Nick Earls introduced the performance and shared a few funny stories about Grant. Darren Hanlon opened the musical proceedings with a fine reading of Easy Come, Easy Go. Of all the performers this evening Darren seemed the most comfortable with the material. Dane O'Hara took to the stage next. He gave a very emotional performance of a song he had written for Grant called "The Last of the Gentlemen". As a special tribute he also played one of Grant's fave Bob Dylan songs "Shelter from the Storm". Guy Webster joined him on harmonica. Dave McCormack and the Polaroids put in a great rendition of Rock n Roll Friend. Adele & Tyrone Noonan sang backing vocals. The crowd really got into this one. The rest of the set-list went like this: Guy Webster - Boundary Rider. Guy Webster & Tyrone Noonan - Devils Eye. Tyrone Noonan & Guy Webster - Quiet Heart. This performance was simply stunning. Tyrone's band "george" recorded this with the GoBs as a b-side to their "Still Real" single. Tyrone Noonan, Adele & Guy Webster- Mrs Morgan. Tyronne Noonan, Guy Webster & Adele - Bye Bye Pride. Unfortunately Tyronne blew his earlier good work by fluffing the lyrics on several ages during this song. Unforgivable. Adele did not look impressed. Adele gave a looked to the sky, We miss you Granty" before starting "One Plus One". It was the first time I've seen her handle lead vocals and she put in a fine performance. Dane O'Hara helped with the backing vocals. For the grand finale everyone took to the stage and grabbed a guitar or a microphone. Darren Hanlon took the lead vocal for what was my pick for the night. Right Here. The song had everyone smiling and singing along. Love Goes On and Streets Of Your Town finished the night with a bang. I'll fill this in with some more detail when I get the chance. |
