Robyn Hitchcock & The Venus 3's new album Ole Tarantula has vaulted into my favorite album of 2006 after a couple of listenings. It's easily his best in the last 10 years.

Andreas, I ordered mine direct from the Yep Roc website and got it early. It also came with a bonus disc with three live cuts!

I wasn't going to "go there", Michael, but you're talkin' me into it. No faint praise you're offering up there.

Yep Roc just might be my favorite label out there. The GBs, Nick Lowe, my favorite surf group, Los Straitjackets...they seem to specialize in plain old, no-frills, non-pretentious, but great music!

Hardin, Yep Roc also has the Toronto band The Sadies that I like. I also can't forget to mention Caitlin Cary and Thad Cockrell, whose 2005 album Begonias was my favorite album from last year. Tres Chicas (with Caitlin) is also on Yep Roc.

Michael, this is great.

Are there any other Hitchcock albums anybody can recommend?

Yep Roc gets cooler all the time. Yesterday, they signed Kristin Hersh to a deal that includes future 50 Foot Wave and Throwing Muses projects.

Kevin, Hitchcock has a rich and vast catalog that I've probably only heard half of, but I don't think you can go wrong with these to start:

Soft Boys:
Underwater Moonlight
Invisible Hits

solo:
Black Snake Diamond Role
Element of Light

That's only the tip of the iceberg!

Kev, if you're open to stark, acoustic stuff, I would also recommend "I Often Dream of Trains" and "Eye". Also, another great one that features his (ex?) band, the Egyptians, is "Fegmania!".

Finally snagged a copy of "Ole". And, whoever said it is right - it is the best thing he's done in ages. Lotsa nice tracks and the one about Arthur Kane, NY Doll, is surprisingly moving.

Agreed LK, just played Ole Tarantula and the song about Arthur is very moving. I like the title track as well. Just looked at his biography on AMG, he's 53!! I thought he was early 40s. I love that stuff AMG do, like influence on, influenced by, similar to etc. Aparrently he is similar to The Fall and The Pixies - oh really!

Yeah, I want to see the biodoc they made about Arthur Kane and the NY Dolls - supposedly Morrisey had some involvement in it, as he is a huge zealot about that band.

Hitchcock has been around forever...the only similarity between him and the Fall and Pixies is possibly the whimsical, out there, lyrics...not that you'd call the Fall or Pixies whimsical, but to me, their lyrics often defy strict linear interpretation...

AMG is like Wiki, innit, in that it allows user contributions. So you can never be 1000% about the veracity of what you're reading...

Hey, for you folks up on Robyn's latest, what musicians are playing with him these days? For years, the Egyptians were basically the Soft Boys minus Kimberly Rew, then the Soft Boys made a comeback album a few years ago and went away again. Is Hitchcock still playing with those guys on his solo albums?

"Ole" features the "Venus 3": Peter Buck, Scott McCaughey (sic?) and some other dude...a rockin' little combo...

Kurt and Hardin, the 4th member is REM's current drummer Bill Rieflin. So the Venus 3 is 1/2 of the current REM. In fact, I consider Ole Tarantula the best REM album since Document. Who needs Stipe anyway these days!

LK, you sure about AMG being like Wikipedia? As far as I know these are real, 100% music critics.

Not sure at all...I seem to remember a way one could make entries in all the "sounds like"/"influenced by" categories...Of course, all the long reviews are obviously written by their staff of critics...

Good point, Michael - THAT'S why the new Hitchcock disc is so good. It's REM with much better singing and songwriting...they should dump Stipe! Let him make a duet record with Courtney Love...

Kevin, if they are then some of them are not very good at what they do as the site is full of errors. For example, check out A Man Called and Broken Toy Shop by E ( also known as Mark Oliver Everett aka Eels. ) As you can see, the songs are credited to Emerson/Huxley instead of Everett/Huxley. In addition, the discography page also shows that E has released an album called 'Natalie Ai Kamauu' on the JVC label. Natalie Ai Kamauu is actually a Hawaiian singer whose first solo release is E.

http://www.natalieaikamauu.com/

Overall it is a good site but it does contains a lot of errors and omissions
