JJJ radio announced this morning that there would be a tribute show for the Go-Betweens and Grant McLennan in late November this year as part of their OZ music month celebrations.

They have contacted Robert and he has given his blessings for the event.

From the website:

“An all star tribute to the Go Betweens and the late Grant McLennan. Featuring a house band of Go-Between members Glenn Thompson, Adele Pickvance and led by the wonderful Dave McCormack and his brother Dylan. Guest singers will include Sarah Blasko, Glen Richards (Augie March), Darren Hanlon, Toby Martin (Youth Group), Bob Evans plus some guest guitaring from Ian Haug of Powderfinger and more singers still to be announced.”

There was no mention of Robert performing. But I guess you never know.

Hi this is Dave; we're currently assembling a compilation CD that will pay tribute to Grant McLennan and the Go-Betweens. We've had a tremendous response from bands so far. Now we'd like to reach out to the fans, people like us who experienced the Go-Betweens over the years through their records and live shows. If you have any photos of Grant or the band, please contact us. We would like to use them for the CD booklet art and layout. Our goal is to make this as personal and affecting a tribute as possible. Grant was so special to us, and we want to make this release something he would be proud of - we nedd help from the true fans that were affected by his passing as much as were are. Thanks.

I wonder if Amanda would stop by and be a guest singer as well as play her oboe and violin? Her violin playing on Quiet Heart would bring tears to everyone in attendence.

Thanks, Charles. This project is really taking on steam now, and we would love to hear from anyone else on this board that would like to contribute. We just got confirmation from The Clientele this week that they'll be covering "Orpheus Beach". What we need now are photos and other authentic tidbits from this magical era. We miss Grant so much... and want to counter our sorrow with something pure and lasting.

Thanks for posting Michael D. I had no idea this was happening. I just hope I can score a ticket. I rang the Tivoli and it looks like the only way to get a ticket is to win one from JJJ. I don't like my chances there. Oh well...I'll hang outside the venue and beg for entry if I have to.

I heard the last portion of the show. I joined the stream at 4:30 AM US East Coast time. Had to listen very quietly while my wife was sleeping in the next room. She is so sensitive to sounds at night, and this was one raucous crowd at the Tivoli!

According to the emcee, the musicians rehearsed together for the first time less than 36 hours before the show. Of course, with Adele and Glenn in the rhythm section, not much to worry about there.

The emcee said Robert was in the audience. I'm sure he must have enjoyed it.

By the time I tuned in, the band was performing a block of Robert's songs. Everything was very nicely done. The songs were the stars, not the guest singers, and it was all the better for it.

Show ended with "Dive for Your Memory". A nice touch. Seemed like a fitting tribute. Congratulations to all involved for doing justice to Grant and the Go-Betweens.

It was a wonderful show. Very moving; great performances. I missed the first few minutes because I was tuned into the wrong station (my days of FM radio being long over - I'm an AM man all the way). I will write more when I have a chance. The people involved are to be applauded for not picking the more obvious pop songs.

According to my source on the inside (I couldn't attend due to interstate work commitments) there were cameras, so we might expect the show to be broadcast on JTV some time in near the future.

That's good news Andy! I'd be very happy too if it were released as an album - but ABC have never properly utilised/commercialised their catalogue of sessions in the way, for instance, the Peel sessions have been released.

I was lucky enough to win tickets to this event. It was an incredibly special night. Very emotional. The concert was filmed for JTV and will be broadcast on the ABC and ABC2 according to the cameraman I spoke to after the show. He didn't know about any future DVD release. It could be a possibility, as the first concert JTV filmed (You Am I) is being released in a few days. The set list went something like this:

Head Full of Steam - Dave McCormack
Lee Remick - Darren Hanlon
Right Here - Darren Hanlon
No Reason to Cry - Bob Evans (Kevin Mitchell)
Bye Bye Pride - Sarah Blasko
Dusty in Here - Youthgroup
This Girl, Black Girl - Youthgroup
Spring Rain - Dan Kelly
Draining the Pool for you - Dan Kelly
Hold Your Horses - Sarah Blasko + Darren Hanlon
The House That Jack Kerouac Built - Glen Richards (Augie March)
People Say - Glen Richards (Augie March)
Streets of your Town - Bob Evans (Kevin Mitchell)
Finding You - Glenn Thompson
Dive For Your Memory - Glenn Thompson

My performace choice for the night would have to be Sarah Blasko's Bye Bye Pride. The crowd response was so intense. As mentioned earlier the song selection was most surprising. There were a few songs I've never seen performed live before. The audience consisted of a great mix of young and old. Unfortunately most were there as competition winners and not GoB fans. There was a distinct lack of singing going on, which is usually prevalent at a GoBs gig. Thankfully the excitement of the gig being broadcast live to radio gave the crowd a real charge and they really got into the gig. Lots of screaming, dancing and applause. Adele and Glenn did a great job of holding it together emotionally and keeping the show rolling along. Adele was visibly tearing up during No Reason to Cry, while the final two songs from Glenn were amazingly powerful. Dave and Dylan McCormack on drums and guitar respectively. Adele on bass and Glenn playing acoustic guitar. There was not a dry eye in the house.

T-shirts made specially for the night and were available in the foyer. Simply reading McLennan in red lettering that formed the shape of a guitar. A bit tacky but I had to get one. It was too good an evening not to.

I went last night to the tribute gig and it was so moving. I agree-beacuse there was comp winners a few that were around me just showed no respect-until I gave them a "stare." Sarah Blasko's "Bye Bye Pride" was just amazing, I had tears. Well done to Adele and Glen and co for organising it-was just brilliant!

I almost never post here these days but have to mention the T-shirts. Adam mentions the use of "McLennan" in the shape of a guitar. What he may not have realised is that it mimics the Monkees' famous logo - the Monkees, of course, being Grant's favourite band.

It was a wonderful show, and a credit to all involved.

From http://www.ravemagazine.com.au

THE GO-BETWEENS TRIBUTE SHOW
The Tivoli Thursday Nov 30
As part of Triple J's Ausmusic month, tonight's
tribute to one of Brisbane's best-loved bands was a
fitting way to say goodbye to Grant McLennan, and
to introduce the songs of the Go-Betweens to a whole
new audience. Long time fans Dave and Dylan
McCormack were joined by Adele Pickvance and Glen
Thompson from the last Go-Betweens line up, and
an array of guest vocalists who paid homage to some
of the greatest songs written in this country.
Highlights included Darren Hanlon's version of
Lee Remick, Sarah Blasko's gorgeous rendition of
Bye Bye Pride, Dan Kelly on Spring Rain and Augie
March's Glenn Richards on House That Jack Kerouac
Built. Kevin Mitchell, a.k.a Bob Evans, also shone
on Streets Of Your Town. Cattle & Cane was a notable
exclusion, but then again it would take a brave
man indeed to tackle such a song. But the night’s
most memorable moment came in the encore when
Glen Thompson dedicated Dive For Your Memory to
his late band mate: "This is for Grant and everyone
who loved him".It was a great effort for a band that
had only rehearsed for a few days, and a clear indication
of the quality of the original songs.

Me, too. I'd imagine we could sell quite a few on this board. Hey, and if our Lansing, MI get-together ever happens, we can completely geek out and all wear them!

I can see the headline in the Lansing newspaper: "Band fans assaulted by disgusted bar patrons for matching t-shirts."

I just wish we could get the Go-Betweens shirts sold through the official merchandise shop in the States. Last I checked, they don't have a U.S. shipping option.

By the way, Rob, LK already wears a uniform when he posts. Let him tell you about it. (OK, Mr. Smith, that's your unsubtle cue to amuse us.)

Actually, contrary to the rumors, I don't wear a uniform when I post...I would wear a subtle midriff-baring ensemble, w/earrings and necklace, a la Mr.Forster in the "Head Full of Steam" video, but I'm afraid it wouldn't cover my beer gut!

So instead, I dress up as the indian from the Village People. It's a lot of work, but it inspires me...

Kurt lobs it up and LK drives it out of the park. I gotta say, it's especially strange to picture people you've never met dressed up in native American regalia while posting. But I do feel a bit better about it than I would if you were rockin' the whole "HFOS" outfit.

By the sound of things, we really need this McLennan t-shirt.

Yes, we need them shirts. Someone's missing out on a tremendous financial opportunity - there are tens, dare I say dozens, of dollars to be earned here!

There was a company who was selling Orange Juice, Aztec Camera and Josef K t-shirts on ebay, I noticed a GoBetweens one too, I think they were nicking photos etc from sleeve art from Postcard 7 inchers and I noticed they'd nicked a josef K pic I had scanned in at 3,000 dpi from a small unseen photographers contact sheet on my josef k site and they made a t-shirt out of it! Bastar*s! So I dare say you may find a GB's tee if you look.

That's a good suggestion, Spence. I took a quick look-see and didn't see anything, but something might pop up. Truth be told, I'm a bit intimidated by eBay and by auctions in general. I'm one of those people who need to be told exactly what things cost, up front, or else I get all discombobulated. I almost bought a Saturn back when they had that fixed-pricing policy just so I wouldn't have to haggle with a car dealer.

I don't know if I am correct but isn't all we need a good-quality copy of the tribute-show t-shirt logo, to be distributed here? Then everyone of us can print it onto this special foil (don't know the technical term) and iron it onto any t-shirt.

Adam, it was a posting in jtv website forum, apparently by one of the producers at jtv.

I can't take credit for finding this link. I get postings from the Tallulah mail list and someone on there posted the link.

I do wish the show had continued with Lindy. It was odd to have her show up right at the end.

I thought that was a bit odd, too, Randy. In fact, I found all the stuff about the relationships coy and a little weird in general. I mean, Lindy - surely one of the great drummers around and a very essential member of MK I - could have provided some more valuable insight about the workings of the band beyond the brief (and unilluminating) cameo she was given. Not to say that the stuff about how Grant and Amanda composed together at home wasn't interesting. But in general, I thought there were parts where they were trying to tart things up too much. Still, a very interesting piece.

Great to finally see that Dig TV special--thanks for sharing the link.

I thought the discussion about relationships in the group was a bit surprising, as wasn't that part of what Grant and Robert were uncomfortable about in David's book? I guess Amanda and Lindy are just a little less guarded about that stuff.

I am most wary about contributing here but I feel I should.

I have just watched the episode on a dodgy Dial-up connection (31.2kps it says) so the images were blurred but the audio was okay.

And my question is "What on Earth is coy, surprising or uncomfortable about what was said?"

Surely hearing Amanda talking about the reality of her life and times with the Go-betweens and her relationship with Grant in such a positive and joyful manner is a wonderful way to celebrate his life.

Dare I ask, "Is it a gender thing here?"

I am willing to debate this.

My view is that I thought that it was great to hear from Amanda and, because Lindy is a good friend of Amanda, perhaps she happened to be there to support her friend.

I thought Amanda came across very genuine with much sincerity. Dare I say it, although I love them as artists, as artists, G and F, would be quite precious about most of their hisroty, relationships, and I suppose you would expect a more straight forward delivery of events and relationships from someone like Amanda, who came in at a much later stage. Theya ll the GB's seem like wonderful people, which ever way you look at it. Not a bad word to say bout any of em from a fan's perspective, the press have always loved em too.

Hey, Michelle: I was perhaps imprecise in my post: I didn't mean to claim that Amanda or Lindy's comments were inappropriate. I questioned the editing choices the filmmakers made. I would have liked to hear more from Lindy about her musicial contributions to the band. Amanda's comments about collaborating with Grant at home - and her implication that Lindy and Robert did the same - were very interesting. I thought limiting Lindy to a credit-run cameo talking about how Grant and Amanda hooked up sort of shortchanged her enormous contribution to the band's sound. Putting it at the end made her look like a footnote, which she most certainly isn't.

I agree it was great to see and hear from both Amanda and Lindy. I do wish Lindy's part had been more extensive because, let's face it, she's essentially an original member. Everything in life is nuanced, so it's no surprise to me that there is a bittersweet quality to both Amanda's and Lindy's memories. They had incredible experiences but also some legitimate grievances.

In many ways I suppose we're all in danger of creating something that is not there with all these comments. There could of been 101 reasons why Lindy was not there, also a lot of these docu things suffer from poor editing, you never know what's on the cutting room floor so to speak!

Man, I thought the whole thing was dee-liteful. Amanda's reminiscences are indeed joyful and touching, and absolutely laced with the bittersweet for all that was, all that could've been...I flashed on the perfect person to play her in the movie, if it's ever made: Cate Blanchett. There's a definite resemblance and Cate, since she's already a fan, would probably have no resistance to the role...

Question for tech-minded folks: is there any way to save this program? It doesn't seem likely that it will be posted there forever...

Er...umm, thanks, Kurt. If that videotaping idea doesn't work, maybe I can just make a bunch of sketches of the documentary, get out my tape recorder, etc....
