Sure can Andreas- great comp although the title of the album may be misleading. Rudeboy music is traditionally thought to be the ska or rocksteady variant of reggae music, however the title of the album alludes to the song content not the type of music eg Johnny Osbournes "Hooligan", Owen Grays "Ballistic Affair", Dillingers "Stop The War" and John Holts "Hooligan" are not ska or rocksteady, these are tough roots songs. There is ska and rocksteady to be found though, Jackie Opals "Youre Too Bad", The Wailers "Good Good Rudie" and The Clarendonians "Rude Boy Gone To Jail" for example. A look at the song titles tell you the real reason why the album is called Studio One Rude Boy. | ||

joanna newsom - Ys- unsure whether I like this or not. vocally she falls into that hysterical banshee style normally associated with Bjork, and there are definate similarities to early Kate Bush (not good in my opinion). plus points are Albini's production and Van Dyke Parks strings. Oakley Hall - Gypsum Strings - excellent country rock from a band which includes a co founder of Oneida. LK - I'm guessing youve checked them out, what do you think? The Shins - Wincing The Night Away - This is the the one that will break them big style hopefully. | ||

Alright, Rob! Hope yours comes out as good - I had good luck with it (if I do say so myself), even if it only ended up with a distended belly and lots of lolling on the couch like a beached whale... Nothing staves off those winter blues like a pot of something good cooking on the stove. Speaking of "not getting", I just dont get all the hype over this Joanna Newsom record. Its a turkey. two things I'm not keen on are hippy dippy lyrics and screaming banshee female vocalists - uuuurrghhhh. as I said the musics not too bad, if a bit syrupy at times - dont believe the hype thats surrounding this record is my advice. | ||

Aberfeldy - pristine pop from Scotland, great girl backup voices, only bought because Aberfeldy the town was the first place where I walked into a pub & ordered a pint and the barmaid asked me if I was an archeologist and I brushed prettily Mazzy Star (All my swan) - Nancy Sinatra on Valium. With crunchy geetars. Lloyd Cole newie - then I poured dishwater over my head. Liked the dishwater. Okkervill River - Down the river - Melodramatic country rock, or something. jolly good Saturday afternoon I pulled the armchair into the sunlight and listened to side 2 of Gobetweens London Live again, a wonderful sequence of some of their best songs, delicious strings, played Love Goes On twice, very loud. Felt very good. | ||

Oooh, Hardin's got "Brave Words." What do you think of it, Hardin? This music junkie cut work today and went to Amoeba. So far I've listened to: Bonnie "Prince" Billy - The Letting Go. 50% of this album, including the first song, grabs me right away. The other 50% sounds a bit dull on first listen but we'll see how it develops. Jackie Mittoo - Wishbone. One of Jamaica's great sidemen (organ) but this 1971 album is bit more crossover in sound than I was expecting. Definitely worth having. Love the 'fro. Charles Blackwell Orchestra - Those Plucking Strings. Great in concept but disappointing in fact, this early Joe Meek production of pizzicato versions of skiffle favorites suffers both by coming from a so-so sound source and also from predating Meek's creative golden era. Blackwell would become a great writer/arranger just a few years later but he was only 20 here. Jackie DeShannon - Put a Little Love in Your Heart. I procrastinated buying the reissue of her most commercially successful album because I assumed it would be crap. It's not her best but it's actually fairly good. Still awaiting listening: Fatima Mansions - In the Former West. I'm real curious what this will sound like; just hoping Cathal's Steely Dan tendencies are more in check than they were with Microdisney. The Best of Love. Ok, I finally did it; it's a gaping hole in my collection but I couldn't commit to an actual album or to the box set. Robyn Hitchcock - Ole Tarantula. I haven't bought a new Hitchcock record in years; this promises to be fun. The Fall - The Complete Peel Sessions 1978 - 2004. I'm hunkering down with this tonight and really looking forward to it. | ||

Randy, Microdisney's Steely Dan tendencies came not from Cathal Coughlan but from guitarist Sean O'Hagan (later of The High Llamas - a very SD-sounding band a lot of the time). Lost In The Former West has a bit of a Scott Walker thing going on at points. | ||

Umm, it sounds pretty great so far, Randy. Haven't listened enough to properly digest it. Do you rate it as their best? I thought Submarine Bells set the bar pretty high... Other stuff I be lisnin to: John Fogerty - his first solo album. Actually, probably my favorite of his solo records. Man, this shit just jumps out of the speakers (listening as we speak)... Also, I downloaded a song by the Dropkick Murphys. I had kind of discounted them as a distaff, poor man's Pogues, but it's actually really good. Kevin, Padraig, what can you tell me about them? | ||

Dropkick Murphys ** Sing Loud, Sing Proud! Hellcat Records What The Mighty Mighty Bosstones did with ska and Fishbone did with reggae - mix it with punk - Dropkick Murphys try to do with trad Irish. If I were a college student in their native Boston, and had drunk enough beer to float a tanker, I'd likely proclaim this the greatest party record ever and love its 'authentic Irish sound'. But my student days are over, I'm sober and in Dublin. Some of it is great, such as the Clash-like Fortunes Of War, and some of it is terrible - why get Shane McGowan to sing Good Rats when he's barely intelligible?
