My Italian Dictionary of Rock/Pop, while extremely lukewarm towards the GoBs & Triffids (two stars out of five for Oceans Apart!), goes wild for an Oz singer (unknown to me) called Simon Bonney & his two solo albums, both five stars, hailed as masterpieces etc...Would this be true?? | ||

I'm told Bonney works as a solicitor in Sydney now, having given up on the biz. His solo stuff is comme ci, comme ca - but those early Crime albums are really worth listening to. Their perfomance on the Wim Wenders film 'Wings Of Desire' speaks volumes. | ||

And there is also one song on the soundtrack of Wenders' "Until the end of the world". a fantastic soundtrack which also features Elvis Costello, Patti Smith, Nick Cave, Talking Heads etc..... | ||

rowland s. howard was my guitar god at that time. we drove hundreds of kilometers to saw them live. i remember that we arrived early in the afternoon and went drinking and eating at the cafe at the concert location. thw whole band ate and drank their,too. but we didn't talked to them. that would be not cool enough. | ||

True that, JB. Though, sadly, I've repeated that pattern many times with various artists... Used shops are fascinating. It's funny how certain things tend to show up. It's in a way, the most telling review there is. I don't care how many 5 star reviews something receives, if it's in the used bins a week after coming out, you just know history is not going to judge it kindly. Funny too, there are certain artists you never see in the bins - Costello and the GBs, for instance.... | ||

Really, LK? I see tons of EC albums in the bins around here--mostly the '90 era and beyond, admittedly. I've contributed a few to the used bins myself, to be honest. And, sadly, I see a discouraging number of Go-Betweens albums as well, considering how few they sold in the first place. | ||

Once in a blue moon you'll see one of the "low curb appeal" ones, like "North", but very rarely, at least based on the places I frequent. And no, I've never in my life seen a GBs disc in a used bin. Is it that the people in So Cal have such good taste, or is it just that they have more money?  | ||

I understand the feeling you're describing when you see a GBs used bin album, but I don't feel it as strongly, partly because it's offset by the thought that someone who might be curious about the GBs but not quite willing to pay the new CD price might just try a used one. | ||

Well, I'm not going to lie. About four years ago, I found all six of the Beggars Banquet reissues of the '80s albums in the used bin at Sonic Boom. As an admitted latecomer to the group who only had the Mk II albums and the Bellavista Terrace comp at the time, I snatched them all up. And I went from liking the group a lot to loving them beyond reason after I finally heard their entire body of work. I don't know why the previous owner of the CDs dumped the entire collection, but I thank him or her. Because it would have taken me a lot longer to buy all six of those albums at new CD prices. And, by the way, I've since bought all the Jetset 2-CD reissues and have given the Beggars Banquet CDs to others to enjoy. Pay it forward, right? | ||

LK, same here, I don't even want to know the number of CDs I have sold off again, even though I am extra-careful when I buy stuff. they may not be in the used bin, but I am astonished that every Smiths album is available at a discount price. | ||

Kurt, Maybe the reissues belonged to a critic? I use to frequent a second-hand shop, where it was obvious a few music journos ditched everything that they had been given. I picked up the original two Josef K CDs before the reviews even appeared in print! | ||

You know what Andrew reminds me of seeing Josef K on CD for the sirst time ever in 1990. I saw the cd and could not take it in, no one had released anything from Postacard on CD, I went inbto a daze! my wife then girlfriend bought me both cd's for my Xmas, and the excitement in listening to all these songs I had played to death on vinyl was quite something to behold. I think my first impression was that I could now hear everything. This is a case in point really, that vinyl does not always win over, esp if its old vinyl like all my battered Postacrd stuff. The Endless Soul comp from '98, I had a vinyl copy from Malcolm Ross and its sund quality is as good as the CD if not better dependant upon quality of deck you have. |
