my ipod has gone totally random. i'm definitely an album sorta guy and like to listen to them from start to end, but recently it's been like rearranging the order of them and also duplicating certain songs (admittedly, usually my favourites). anyone have any ideas? their website makes no sense to me. much like that tired times 100 list. though how they heard about the stone roses is a bit of a mystery...

cheers,

J.

Sorry Joe, I can't be of any help. I seem to be one of the lucky ones who have had very few problems at all - and none serious - with my iPod.

no problem padraig....it's the only problem i've had too. other than the fact i'm onto my third and they're averaging about nine months in lifespan. got myself a three year warranty on this one though, so i'm not worried about it anymore. did someone say free upgrade? =)

Something weird going on with your iTunes, perhaps? Do you plug your iPod into your computer w/iTunes to recharge it? Because if you do and it's on the "automatically update" preference, it'll scramble the contents of your iPod every time you make additions/deletions to iTunes. Just a guess...

And by the way, Joe, I'm also on my third iPod. The first one, a circa-'04 20GB model, lasted about 11 months, dying just before the warranty expired. Its replacement lasted all of three a half months, managing to die a week or two after the 90-day warranty period for replacements. (I should have bought the extended warranty!) My third, a Nano, is going strong after six months, but I don't trust it at all. Thanks, Apple, for getting me addicted to this unreliable, expensive little device.

you said it brother!

i went through two 20gb ones like yours i think before i dug in a bit deeper and got the 60gb video. mostly just for the added bonus of being able to watch bananarama circa-siobhan clips whenever i please. will revisit my settings on itunes...it's not on autoupdate, but the entire thing does reek of "smart features" which i've enabled. or not disabled, as the case may be.

Good luck with that 60GB video iPod, Joe...hope they've worked the bugs out of the iPods with hard drives. I bought the Nano thinking it might be more reliable because it uses flash memory. I really like the Nano, but 2GB is woefully insufficient...someday, I'll brave getting one like yours. Aren't they up to 80GB on the top of the line models now?

Mine is a 60g photo one. Not that I wanted it for it's photo-holding ability! I would not be interested in the video aspect either. I'll get a nano some time, but I'll wait til they up the capacity again - it's at maximum 8g now.

Dammit, Padraig, you're making me post like a madman to stay ahead of you in total post count! :-)

You know, after using a 2GB Nano for awhile, 8GB sounds like paradise. I guess having an iPod that only holds 450-500 songs is an exercise in self-discipline. But how I envy you guys with 60GB to play with...

I have 4000 songs and I've only used up about a quarter of my memory. I'm still occasionally going back to old records to load them in. I hope my 60gig unit lasts longer than these posts are suggesting but it doesn't get hard use. I use it mostly at my desk at work and not in stressful situations like walking or jogging. I'll bet jogging really screws things up.

Joe, hopefully you are following Apple's directive about ejecting the unit from the computer with the appropriate button and not just pulling the plug. That supposedly deranges the data on the drive.

ha...yeah. i'm toeing the apple line and ejecting from either itunes or the usb arrow down the bottom.

though i did once destroy my external hard drive by pulling it (accidentally) out of the usb socket. like - the physical drive that is, completely unformattable! good times.

Joe, have you got itunes set as name on your browser? Just above the track definitions there are headings, Name, Time, Artist, Album etc.
If so, just click on artist or album as preferred.

My ipod died recently after just short of 2 years of hefty use. The fools sent me a re-conditioned one. For the price of a £79.99 extended years warranty. Who's fooling who?

yeah i usually browse by artist, as that then cues up each album in track order therein. i've also taken stuff off the pod....reset it in itunes (everything looked in order, etc), but once i copied it back accross it was scrambled eggs again.

80 pounds for one year? fuck....i got a two year extension on the one year warranty for 80 AUD!

I've had a 60gb (non video one) for 18 months and it's been in daily use without any dramas whatsoever. I use Anapod explorer and not i-tunes because it's more user friendly.

I'm sorry to hear about everyone else's troubles.

Built in obselecence! I'm afraid that's what the big boys dictate.

However I must add, after working on and knowing many MAC people over the years, although they are more expensive, and cooler looking! The trusrt MACintosh is far more reliable. the people I know who have sent their PC's back within a short time of purchase is quite remarkable. I can name on one hand the amount of times any of my MAC's has been sent back.

own the same one as donat. i had no problems at all until i tunes version 7. since then -when i connect my ipod- itunes refreshes the music, but do not load the photos. that don't bother me, because the music is what matters. unfortunately i tunes didn't stop with the 'refreshing' so i always have to cut the connection. does anyone of you have also troubles with itunes 7? i have heard that a lot of people are dissatisfied with that version.

Joe and others,
I don't have an Ipod, but an Iriver player. I encountered the same problem there, but solved it via a freeware programme which creates its own database on the player. My Iriver has 20GB and is almost full. I discovered the programme after having a look at several Iriver forums on the internet.
There should be even more Ipod forums around where you should find help. Good luck to you all

my experience with macs is that they are generally safer and virus free, but (warning:glib statement to follow!) still have some compatibility issues with nifty little programs like the one john's just described. their laptops only really have a shelf-life of three or so years, much like their pc counter parts. but yeah, i should get stuck into the ipod forums. those things always intimidate *and* bore me though!

Apple's laptops only have a shelf life of three years, Joe? Uh oh. I just bought a MacBook a couple of months ago. I realize it'll be hopelessly outdated in terms of performance/features in three years, but I hope it'll at least still work! I've gotten to the point in life where I'd like to get four or five years out of a computer before I have to replace it.

oh not apples exclusively, but most notebooks yeah. some a little longer. that's why the standard of those "flexi-rent" deals for laptops are over a three year period. and also how they sting you for an extra two grand on your three thousand dollar machine.

all that being said, i've thumped the living daylights out of little ox4 here, an LG pc, and almost two and a half years on he/she's just about going as strong as ever!

Knock on wood, but I've had excellent luck with Mac products. I've always used Macs in my business, and have never had one crap out on me. I replace them about every three years, just because new and bigger software upgrades seem to render the computers quaint around that time, and give the old ones away to friends. With the exception of an iBook a friend dropped off a two-story balcony, I think three of my castoffs are still in use - one after 10 years.

My 30G iPod has been trouble-free, as well, although, working at home, I don't carry it around a lot.

From what a number of you are saying, I'm thinking maybe Apple has improved the reliability of the iPods with hard drives. When my second 20GB failed, I was talking to the guy at the Apple Store's "Genius Bar" and I asked him if he thought the iPods with hard drives were unreliable. Of course he couldn't/wouldn't knock his company's own products, but in a roundabout way he admitted a lot of them come back under warranty for repair/replacement.

You guys are probably on to something that the more you use the iPod as a portable, the less likely it is to last. I commute to and from work on bus and walk around with it a lot, so my iPod gets bumped and exposed to weather frequently. I guess the answer is two iPods--a Nano for exercise/commuting, a video iPod for home use. More money to Apple! Good business strategy, Jobs.

Not exactly a burning issue here, but those of you with iPods who use the "shuffle" mode, do you think it's really random? I don't think so. It tends to select a group of about 20 albums and then pulls things from them with only a relative few one-offs. And the play tally that is reported back to the machine is absolute claptrap. My particular iPod has an astonishing preference for Dylan's "Queen Jane Approximately" hitting it consistently every other week but the tally admits to only 3 plays total. "Queen Jane" has been in my iTunes library for 6 months. It also seems to really like Winnebago Orchestra's "Spinning Wheels" a lot. It admits to a total of 6 plays for that.

iPods have a life of their own Randy! they are so individual!!!!!
By the way Spinning Wheels was influenced quite heavily by early GoBees tho never quite put my finger on what exact song...

Who knows what "logic" goes on in the tiny little iPod brain in shuffle mode. I like listening in shuffle mode, but even though I have the settings to "least likely to repeat an artist," it's been known to play three Go-Betweens songs in a row and keeps hitting the same one or two tracks by other artists, even if I have a bunch of other songs by that artist.

Forgive me if this is too obvious, Randy, but if you don't let the song play all the way through to the end, iTunes won't count it as a "play." So perhaps you've heard "QJA" many times but then skipped forward before it was quite finished?

yeah the shuffle mode is not all that random at times. i used to have a big playlist i would listen to when jogging (or attempting to...) and there were at least five of the same selections every time.

like i mentioned above though, oddly enough, it's usually my faves. must be some algorithm they have there.

Iriver apparantly had the same problem that suffle mode only played artists with letters say A to F.
They have solved it with updated firmware, maybe an new version of itunes also erases the problem. It may be worth checking on the various ipod forums.

Kurt, I wondered about that. Since I happen to like the out-of-tune guitar on "QJA" I always let it play through. It's just an erratic program. I see that Apple's inviting me to download yet another version of iTunes even though I just updated less than 3 weeks ago.

Apparently, according to what I've read, some people think their iPod is spying on them, playing strangely approriate songs at key moments. This one kid interviewed for some article swears his device provides this eerie soundtrack for his life. It's happened to me before, too, but I figure with 5,500 songs stuffed on the thing, that's bound to happen.

But yeah, Randy, there are times random on the iPod seems anything but. Then there are times I play it for hours without a single artist repeat. Who knows what's going on in that little microchip brain? As long as it doesn't turn into Chucky, or cut off my tether and send me tumbling helplessly into the blackness of space, I'm happy.
