I am in Japan where I have been playing a couple of solo shows. I leave in a few hours. I have been lucky enough to comehere in the past with BMX Bandits and Teenage Fanclub. Oceans Apart was on my i-pod as I walked about the Shibuya area of Tokyo. It's strange to 'enjoy' Grant's music when he isn't with us anymore. On Saturday I met the boss of Wonderground Records who released Go-Betweens albums in Japan (he released my Nice Man And The Bad Boys album too). He also brought the GBs over to Japan for their first live shows. We spoke a little about the group and Grant's sad passing. On Sunday I had my main show in Tokyo. The Sloppy Joes were supporting: a Japanese 5-piece, the singer sang in English and had a kind of Edwyn Collins vocal affectation. Minor 7th chords and a trumpet. After watching a couple of songs I went up to the dressing room to think about my setlist. But I could still hear the live music through the walls. I was a little bit nervous - I don't play solo gigs very often. Then I heard The Sloppy Joes launch into "Right Here" and I felt happy and sad at the same time. |

Yes, "happy and sad at the same time" continues to happen to me when I think about and hear Grant's songs. Thanks for sharing Francis, and hope your shows went well! |

I used to live in Japan for a while, and always had Go-Betweens with me in my walkman. The galvanized metropolis that is Tokyo made for an invigorating backdrop, day or night, for my rotating soundtrack. 16 Lovers Lane and Liberty Belle were the ones I remember hearing the most, usually as I caught the last train home from Shibuya or Kichijogi. Lots of minor chords, but alas, no trumpet. |
