Amanda. I really like that tattoo she sports in some pictures, though it's probably fake...

Robert Vickers ca. 1978 - he would've stopped traffic if there was any traffic in Brisbane at that time to stop.

Amanda - I'd have married her on the spot, given the chance.

Though if I wasn't straight, Robert would have my vote. He is, without doubt, the coolest man in the world.

Amanda, but Lindy certainly had her moments as well. Charles, were Amanda and MW-P an item at one time? Anyone else know?

I don't know about sexiest but my vote goes to Robert Vickers for being ultra cool.

I saw him for the first time in 1978 at the Toowong Music shop and was introduced by Grant and listened in on a brief conversation.

What made him cool was that he seemed to me to have been warped from the mid '60s to late '70s.

My older sister used to buy a trendy English magazine back in the '60s and, looking at the be-suited Robert with his mod hairdo, he could easily have been one of the pop stars that adorned those covers. I'm not sure which one he reminded me of, maybe from the Who or the Small Faces etc.

I thought, "My, how cool, how brave, in Brisbane." And what did the punks think?

I wondered, after reading the Nichols book, how did Forster and McLennan, and now that you mention it, Vickers, get away with out getting, you know, punched in the head, or something? They affected, it would seem, some pretty arty, fey behaviour, and I would think there'd have been more than a few butthead macho hooligan types hanging 'round the streets of Brisbane...

Also, apropos of nothing, how tall is Forster? Is he really so gigantic, or is the rest of the band Lilliputian?

Robert is pretty tall Keith. I'm just under 6 feet (I'm 181cm) and was looking up at Robert when talking to him.

When I saw them live, Robert looked like he was 6-4 or
6-5, at least.

She wore a teddy, LK?

I've proudly just passed my 200th post (but I've been here for years - I'm a wall flower by nature)

Briefly, in the Was There Anything I Could do video. If it's not technically a teddy, it's near as dammit.

Hey, no one's mentioned John Wilsteed.

Grant's thing wasn't to be sexy; he was spiritual. I'm sure it got him what he wanted.

As for JW: the only time I saw him play live with the band he looked a complete plonker in my book. And definitely not sexy. I know the line about how he was a great musician (the guitar in 'Streets of your Town' etc), but on that occasion there was something about his general manner towards the band + songs that really got my goat. A kind of disrespect? As if he didn't take the group seriously.

Like many musicians from Brisbane in the late 70s, Willsteed's been quoted as never having been a fan of the Go-Betweens. I guess its a common trait where you might like the people in the band as friends, but not necessarily the music that they make.

Like Ronnie Wood in the Stones (up until the early 90s), he was a hired hand who was payed a weekly wage, so that might explain the "not taking the group seriously" part.

Given his known apathy, it was Willsteed who make 16LL what it is, as well as Amanda's string arrangements. And the 16LL demos strongly reflect that.

As for Willsteed being sexy, well...

I can't get past the fact that JW is, basically, a genius guitar player - the difference between the 16LL demos and the final product attests to his contribution to that record. It is a stark and amazing contrast.

Interestingly, I think JW also received cover-design credit on 16 LL.

Guess that's what explains why he was on the front cover instead of RF, huh?
