I may not be a fuc**er, but I know about him. He came to Edinburgh many moons ago and played various gigs in pubs with Malcolm Ross and an assortment of Scottish mega-stars. OK ,Billy Mackenzie, Paul Haig and Jo Callis. He is from the East Coast of the States and has been part of the Newhaven music scene (Dumper Truck?); friends with Mark Mulcahy and Ray Neal (of the late lamented Miracle Legion. OK "late lamented" by me and possibly 7 other people in the entire world.)

Having said that I have never heard his own recordings - it was mainly covers he did with Malcolm. He has a great 'country' singing voice.

Do I win anything?

Did you ever see ML live Pádraig? I took some a friend to the gig in Islington (when 'Drenched' came out) who knew very little rock/pop music. At the end she asked me why they weren't enormously famous!

They played a few times in the States with the Go-Betweens and their memories seem to consist of various wild Lindy Morrison stories...

I saw ML a few times back around the time of "The Backyard" (which I wish someone would put out on CD, dammit) and "Surprise...". I have very fond and specific memories of driving through Vermont in the wintertime playing "Stephen, Are You There?" over and over and thinking it was one of the most haunting songs I'd ever heard. So count me among your seven, as well, Andrew.

They were pretty good, Padraig, but, as I'm sure you can guess, not life-changing or anything. Just a good, solid band. Mr. Ray was a pretty good guitar player, though, and he played a Les Paul if I remember correctly. As a result, the songs kicked a little harder live than the records did.

I beg to differ with your impressions of live Miracle Legion Rob. I found them extremely uplifting on the half a dozen times that I saw them. Ray was mesmerising (yes, on a Les Paul), completely lost in what they were doing on stage and singer Mark Mulcahy is a true original (who gets better and better with each solo release).

The (latter-days) rhythm section of Spot + Dave went on to back Frank Black.

Mark might be interested in the Grant tribute, as he has been known to play 'Bachelor Kisses' in memory of the man.

How do you rate 'Me and Mr Ray' Rob? As I have already stated elsewhere, I regard it as a real lost classic 'alt-country' record.

I loved "Me and Mr. Ray," Allen, but my CD copy went missing years ago, so I haven't heard it since at least the early '90s. I used to listen to it quite a lot. "The Backyard," though, is still my favorite. As an aside, I was surprised how much I liked "Drenched" when it came out. I didn't even think they were still together when I saw it on the shelves way back when.

One record I've been listening to a lot lately, that I think got just scant mention here, is Josh Ritter's "The Animal Years". It came out last year and is really great.
