That's right, '04 is almost here and therefore it's time to trot out this tired old chestnut. Seeing in the new year just wouldn't be the same without it.

Nominate one or a few of your best albums of '03.

I think it makes for better entertainment if you include a short explanation or rationale of WHY you nominated each selection. But then maybe that's just me.

are we talking favorite albums *released* in '03, or favorite albums we bought in '03?

if it's the former, i'd have to say:
go-betweens - BYBO
the shins - chutes too narrow
aislers set - how i learned to write backwards
paddy mcaloon - i trawl the megahertz

if it's the latter, there's too much to mention.

Yes, released in '03. I did say it was a 'tired old chestnut'.

..and I agree with 'I trawl the Megahertz' although I haven't bought it yet. I've repeatedly listened to it, in its entirety, from the free webcast (and you really need to do this at least once before making any assesment of it).

BYBO - The GBs
North - Elvis Costello
Fever To Tell - Yeah Yeah Yeahs
Vehicles and Animals - Athlete
I Trawl The Megahertz - Paddy McAloon - probably the best of the lot

I'm with you there on Gene Clark's 'No Other'. I've never heard anything like it before - country, soul and (slightly) hippyish rock'n'roll.

British Sea Power's CD is the most enjoyable thing I've listened to all year. I just jump around the room when the first track comes on!

But the album of the year for me goes to John Cale's 'Homo Sapiens'. Brilliant songs, unusual inventive arrangements. I think its the best collection of music he has ever put together.

elephant-the white stripes
music of the spheres-ian brown
yoshimi-flaming lips
revolverlution-public enemy
almost cured of sadness-stephen jones

i think gene clark is one of the greatest singer/songwriters of the last fifty years, up there with hank williams, elvis, dylan and johnny cash. i can't believe he is so little known, his albums with the dillards 'through the morning/through the night & the fantastic expedition of dillard and clark' are also awesome.

the john cale album is also on my list, but i haven't got round to that one yet.

Its got to be '1972' by Josh Rouse. Great album ,really consistent. 10 songs, 9 great and only one duffer.

Also,
'Too Close To See Far'- Cosmic Rough Riders
'Twice'- The Tyde
'Love Is Hell Pt1'- Ryan Adams
'Bright Yellow Bright Orange' - The Go-Betweens

Single of the year - 'Hey Girl' - The Delays (A rewrite of 'There She Goes' and just as good)

I am as usual refreshed by the diverse and intelligent array of tastes displayed under this topic. Not that you want to judge people by their musical taste - god, I hope no-one judges me by mine - but I certainly do feel empathy with you all on these albums of the year.

Mine are the usual things I've been hammering all along.

Royal Dave Graney Show- the Brother Who Lived
New Estate - Considering
The Bites - White Lines and Runways
Pink Stainless Tail (more an EP than an album I suppose)

I only like Melbourne music!

There's only one album that comes to mind:

Justin Sullivan: Navigating By The Stars

How about 'The Cat Empire' then?

They are from Melbourne and if anybody had said to me only 6 months ago that 'Jew-boy Rap' was going to be the next 'big thing' I don't think I could have beleived them.

I haven't heard the album but I do like what I've heard very much.

"Hello, Hello"

Brand new one from THE CHURCH called 'Forget Yourself'. Incredible album of sounds you've never heard from the Church before.

BTW, anyone here ever heard the JACK FROST cd that Grant did with Steve Kilbey of The Church?

Oh yeah...Besides the new album by The Church, I'd also have to give a HUGE recommendation for Justin Sullivan's new solo album called 'Navigating By The Stars'. One of the best albums I've heard in a LONG time. In case your wondering who he is, he was in a band called New Model Army.

The Church have reformed?

..that rings a bell or recognition, but I had since put it out of mind. I certainly would be interested in giving it a try. Thanks!
