This vid, from Jools Holland's show, had previously escaped my notice...still a little painful to see Grant, who looks really healthy here, btw...I thought one of the comments got it exactly right, so I stole it for the subject line: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vGnvRxdPJ 4o |

Nice--thanks for the link. I hadn't seen that clip before either. That's the German drummer whose name escapes me, right--the one RF & GM couldn't stand? |

Matthias Strzoda from Hamburg. Why couldn't they stand him? and through which connection did they know him, why was he picked? yes, I have to swallow when I see Grant in that video. It's also painful when you see them there, playing as a band, and you know that you won't have that again. You won't find it again. |

Nice pick, LK. And linked to it was the whole of the tribute concert in six instalments - just watched 'em all with a lump in my throat. Fantastic! |

That's the guy, Julia. Well, I was crudely paraphrasing from David's book about the band and Matthias's unhappy experiences on the '99 tour. Grant and Robert seemed unhappy with his playing, constantly telling him to play fewer fills and focus on basic timekeeping, which was frustrating to him. And I guess there were personality clashes too. Strzoda was a guy Forster played with in Germany for some of his solo tours, I believe. Glenn Thompson wasn't available for the '99 gigs, so I guess Matthias was the next drummer they thought of. |

Too right, Julia - we'll never find that again. I was struck, watching the video, at how incredibly iconic they were, every bit as much as any great band you care to name, even if the world at large never caught on... |

I was staying just outside Vienna when they were on their last European tour and with a bit of complicated logistics, probably involving an incredibly expensive 3 hour taxi ride to get back, I could have gone to the concert...but in the end, I thought, nah, catch them next time round... nice clip. love going blind, its such a teriffic slice of fretboard fracturing feats of fun. lovely. Goes to prove the later/newer songs were also as important as the older songs. i love the chord structure in He lives my life... |

I wish they would have tour stopped in the mid west in the US in 2000. I would have driven to Chicago to see them. Philly was the closest they got to my neck of the woods. I'm so glad that they tour stopped in Chicago the following US tour in 2005 though. I drove to Chicago to see them at The Abbey Pub and had a great time! |

I saw them here in Chicago in 1999 at the Double Door as a duo, Michael. An amazing, if poorly attended, show. And I was at the Abbey show, too. Man, what a great memory. Wish I'd known you then. It would've been nice to put a least one face to a name on this board. |

He lives my life is SUCH a great song! I saw Robert and Grant "of the Go Betweens" (before the reformation) at the Basement in Sydney where Grant introduced the song for the first time as "another classic from Robert". |

I made that 'God's own band' comment on YouTube so I thought it appropriate that I contribute to this thread! It just seemed the most fitting description of the band. The two songs performed on this Jools Holland show (the other being 'He Lives My Life') offer only proof and substance of the description. Let's face it, being engulfed by The Go-Betweens for twenty odd years was/is like being touched by the hand of God anyway! |

Nice turn of phrase, sir. Good thing I owned up to stealing that and didn't claim credit for it, like I thought about doing... |
