Am I alone here ? Great sense of melody, poetic, bittersweet lyrics and a very appealing off-kilter voice that I find emotional. Great critical plaudits but totally overlooked by the world generally...hmmmm that's a familiar story.

Sometimes I don't post on threads just because I get sick of seeing my name at the top but I've got to say something here. That is very funny Spence. I never thought about it before but you're right. He DOES sound like Paul Young!

Fortunately he can write. I'm not convinced that the new album is particularly strong but even as a place-marker, in his league it's a good effort.

He's a good song writer- no question about it. It's just that he writes the same song over and over again!

I'be been a huge fan for about 6 years and seen him around the country on his tours. I hadn't noticed the paul young thing until you brought it up, now I cannot help but hear it...Gee thanks Spence !

You could dip into his catalogue any point Spence and find quality songs, I'll send a suggested sampler after I've had me tea !

I'm with you, Brother Wilson! I think Sexsmith is f-ing brilliant. I've seen him a few times and even met him once. He is, as you might've guessed, incredibly nice. I was standing in line to see Lucinda Williams, for whom Ron was opening, and he walked by. I said, "look there's Ron Sexsmith". He heard, and walked up and said, "Yep, it's me", and started chatting with us. The man is definitely not in possession of a high horse.

The Paul Young comparison (dammit, Spence!) is there, though it'd never occurred to me, but it's not quite apt, since Sexsmith doesn't have any of that raspy bullshit going on.

He's kept up a remarkably high standard of quality over the course of his albums, but his first two are still probably my favorites.

Feist does a great cover of his "Secret Heart".

Not to change the subject, or veer it off course a bit, but whatever happened to Paul Young? I still think his cover of Marvin Gaye's "Wherever I Lay My Hat" is stone brilliant, and I believe I still own his first two records on cassette tape somewhere in the vaults. Maybe he's persisted over in the UK, but he's invisible Stateside.

I confess to not knowing a ton about Ron Sexsmith. I have a lot of music-loving friends who think very highly of him. Didn't Steve Earle produce one of his records? Come to think of it, where the hell's Steve Earle been?
