Not sure if it's been a problem in the past (mainly middle of the road fodder). But this is getting out of hand. Prince isn't artistically redundant but he's taking money from The Mail, which is the worst rag in this country.

It's when the artists who don't need the money do stuff like this that especially rankles. And remember, Prince is the guy who gave free copies of his last CD (which counted as purchased in terms of the charts) to concert goers a year or two ago, which artificially boosted its place on the U.S. charts and probably had the domino effect of causing the album to sell a lot more copies because, let's face it, there are many buyers who make their decisions on what everybody else is buying.

But, given the current climate of digital music, downloading, the record companies in trouble, etc., I think it's retail war out there and both artists (rich and poor) and the labels (corporate and indie) are pretty much doing whatever they have to to get the maximum bucks out of the music.

I doubt if I'd have sprinted out to be first in the queue to buy Prince's new album even if it had been sold in the conventional way, but I certainly wouldn't buy that scumbag right wing sexist racist trash The Mail, no matter what cd was being flogged with it, even if it was a candid recording of Harpo Marx having a chat with God, Elvis and Marcel Marceau from inside the pearlies...

I notice the sidebar in that article, said that Mike Oldfield had no say in the flogging of Tubular Bells a few months back. My faith has been restored in the man.
