A quick trip to a record shop after the cinema this morning led to this productive haul from the bargain bin - total cost $40 (17.37 pounds, 35.41 US dollars, 24.90 euro) for the six CDs!

The Czars - Goodbye I loved their first album years ago so I thought I'd give this one a shot.

Shuggie Otis - Inspiration Information Been meaning to get this one for many years.

Machine Translations - Wolf On A String Bigged up by a couple of people on this board.

Jimmy Little - Life's What You Make It Been meaning to get this one for a few years too. I adore the album that preceeded it so hopefully this will yield as much joy - no Go-Betweens cover on this one though. He did a stunning version of Cattle And Cane on Messenger.

V/A - Do It Again, A Tribute To Pet Sounds Oldham Brothers, Vic Chesnutt, Daniel Johnston, The Wedding Present and various other indie straw men.

The International Submarine Band All I know about them is that Gram Parsons is among their number.

Ah, Padraig, I love the ISB album, especially cheesy things like "Miller's Cave" and the excellent "Blue Eyes" and his first classic "Do You Know How It Feels to be Lonesome?" Gram was still cutting his teeth here and would be doing more profound things later but his ability to write a song was already very clear.

Re Jimmy Little, it's a great album but not Aussie songs as you'll soon see when you check out the packaging. Do you have "Resonate?" That's the preceding album (after "Messenger.") It's the second album of modern Aussie songs. He does a jaw-droppingly beautiful version of "Bury Me Deep in Love" on "Resonate." It's you and somebody else on here who first turned me onto Little and I have been forever grateful. I probably play those 3 albums of his as often as anything else I have in my collection. He's an interpreter of the very first rank and the songs on these three albums are superb.

I don't have Resonate Randy. I went to his website after I wrote the above and discovered that Messenger did not preceed Life's What You Make It. Resonate is now on my list of course. Bury Me Deep In Love is one of my favourite ever songs so I'm looking forward to hearing Jimmy's take on it (and if an mp3 should wing my way to whet my appetite that would be sweet too ...)

Count me in as a fan of Safe At Home as well, the first and only album by the ISB. It didn't take too long after Jon Corneal of the ISB introduced Gram to the wonders of George Jones and Merle Haggard that Gram dropped his folky ways and embraced country.

Randy/Padraig - thanks for turning me on to Jimmy Little. Got Messenger and Resonate from Napster - havent heard Resonate yet but Messenger is sublime, what a voice. Cattle and Cane is of course wonderful (that song is surely unf*ckupable), but I think its topped by his version of Nick Caves Are You The One That Ive Been Waiting For?

The last 5 records I've bought

Bim Sherman - Love Forever - quality mid 70s roots reggae

The Feelies - Crazy Rhythms - plugging a gap in my collection

Bob Dylan - Dylan (the 3 cd deluxe box set greatest hits thingy)

Microdisney - From Daunt Square to Elsewhere (dont actually have this or the Dylan in my possession yet - Mr Amazon should deliver them tomorrow hopefully)

Joy Division - Unknown Pleasures and Closer (both on vinyl)

hmmm, last five:

Panics - Sleeps Like a Curse
Nice - Nice
Verlaines - Way Out Where
Ashtray Boy - Honeymoon Suite
Ashtray Boy - Macho Champions

Only the Verlaines disc is a bit on the ordinary side.

Kevin, you'll find that "Resonate" is less consistent than "Messenger." That's because he made a couple of his producers happy by doing their crappy songs. But the great things are, once again, great things.

Keving, gauging your JD fandom: are you going to get those same releases on CD, too? They really do look pretty sweet - I may have to splurge for 'em...for the CDs that is, not really a vinyl guy.

Bim Sherman! there's a name I'd forgotten...have to dust off the reggae section of my cd collection and play some again. Kevin, what about your personal top ten reggae list, just out of curiosity?

Meanwhile,
last four cds bought...

Okkerville River, the Stage Names, stunningly beautiful, Will Sheff's vocals are really coming into their own and the words are intriguingly dense.

Everyone is here, Finn brothers. Nice voices, nice tunes. The lyrics, well. Better than Travis I s'pose.

Collected string quartets, Shostakovitch. Something light for the long winter nights. No words of course but painfully honest all the same.

Collected songs of Robert Burns. The Scottish Bob Dylan. Some of the greatest words ever written and a lot of great tunes too. And good to hear one of my favourite Scots voices, Bobby Eaglesham again.

Stuart, are you referring to 'The Complete Songs of Robert Burns' issued by Linn Records in a twelve disc set? If not, be sure to check it out as it is an amazing collection. The sound quality is magnificent and it features the cream of the Scottish folk scene.

It was nice to see the Five Hand Reel albums re-issued on cd last year.

Last five bought:-

1. Black Cab - Altamont Diary
2. Black Cab - Jesus East
3. The Zillions - Play Zig Zag Zillionaire
4. Pivot - Make Me Love You
5. Shout Out Louds - Our Ill Wills

Four from Australia and one from Sweden.

Stuart, give me a day or so for that one. I have literally hundreds of reggae albums so will have to sift through them. However, off the top of my head the list would include 2 Sevens Clash, Super Ape, King Tubby Meets The Rockers Uptown and any one of several Burning Spear albums (that will be the trickiest one to decide!)

Yes, Hugh, it is the Linn set - bought in a moment of Scotsman-in-exile madness - but an extraordinarily rich and wonderful thing it is. And I just googled Bobby Eaglesham's name and found out he died in 2004. What a voice the man had - his versions for 5 hand reel of Red red rose, Carrickfergus, Earl o moray, ae fond kiss... are just stunning I think. Shame he didn't record more stuff.

Stuart, I bought the individual volumes as and when they were released by Linn Records ( no more than two or three a year ) so it took around four years before my set was complete. It really is a majestic collection and a bargain at £60 which is what Linn Records are currently asking for it.

So I did find my Bim Sherman compilation, Taking Off it's called I think, and good to hear it again too. All the reggae features I like - subtle melody, imaginative percussion, odd wee fluttering sounds, parping brass, female backup and a rich creamy vocal over the top. Be good to have something else by this artist. Whatever happened to great reggae music anyway?

No reggae Top 10 would be complete without BU's Red, but then I'm not near the expert that Kevin is regarding reggae not do I have enough reggae albums. Jazz would be no problem for me though, as I have a very decent jazz collection.

White Horses 7" - Dean and Britta. This is a cover of a sixties British tv show apparently and this 7" is a double A side, one version en francais and the other a Sonic Boom remix.

Don't get much chance to do "real" CD shopping here, but last week had a few days in Rome - went with my thick print-out of reggae-stuff-to-buy...couldn't find anything!!
But it was great to be in a real record shop anyway, got a bit dizzy, wife had to help me out after a couple of hours... Purchases included:

T Rex, an introduction.

Versatile Heart, Linda Thompson

Aphrodites Child, the singles (!!)

Altitude, Blue Aeroplanes
(That was just in the rack staring right at me... didn't know they were still going, though of course I've seen the name on some of Spence's posts)

Over, Peter Hammill

Under the black light, Rilo Kiley
(not of course Riley Kilo, as I insisted on calling them to the bemused inquiry guy)

Turin Brakes, the Optimist
(heavily recommended by a mate)

...now all I've got to do is find the time to hear them. Amazon's great, but nothing really beats jumping round racks tumbling on stuff you'd never thought about!

XY I love White Horses, thanks for letting us know that d&b had done it! Intriguesd to Sonic Boom mix!!
Stuart, hope you like Altitude. Its OK, not great, its also not a proper album in that it was recorded at various times with various personnell over the years. Adulthood is great.
That Turin Brakes album is great, whan they were new kids on the block along with Source label mates, Kings of Convenience, I thought world domination would follow...their new album Dark on fire I adore. Its big sounding but still very much TB.

Just heard the D*B White horses, nice, but its so Nouvelle Vague, its got no 'subtle' balls man, its very pedestrian! Rest assured The Winnebago's (when they get around o to it!) will do it justice...

The TrashCan Sinatras used to do an excellent "White Horses". Their recorded version was a little tame (a b-side), but the live one (drenched in feedback) was supreme!

Spence I'd say the version you heard was the Tony Visconti produced album version. Yeah it's not going to change your life or anything and the 7" versions aren't radically different to the album version. Dean Wareham doesn't really do radical cover versions, except maybe for Sweet Child O' Mine (Luna) and Don't Let Our Youth Go To Waste (Galaxie 500).

Kevin, it's been over a decade since I've listened to Sinsemilla as I really need to get my turntable fixed or buy a cd of it. I bought a cd copy of Red years ago, although it's outdated now with the remastered version available now, so Red is fresher in my mind.
