Does anybody know the story behind the ‘Head Full Of Steam’ remix? I have a test pressing of ‘Liberty Belle’ with this version of HFOS on it, but it didn’t turn up on the official version, although it was released as the ‘single version. Was there a change of heart between the pest pressing and the official release?
Also the test pressing has go-betweens and a catalogue number scrawled onto the sleave (as you would expect) but has a very mass-produced looking sticker on it saying ‘contains the remix of HFOS’ what’s the story there? |

The remix is found on "Bellavista Terrace" compilation. It's the same song with a beefed-up drum track and a spoken-word section during the guitar solo (something like "Steam may rise, steam may care..."). Tracey Thorn's harmonies sound a tad higher too.
Speaking for myself, I prefer the remixed version. The "Liberty Belle" recording, like most of the tracks on that album, sounds like Lindy's beating on an empty box of Kleenex. It's punchy w/out being overpowering - the rare track with an '80s drum sound that works. |
