Just posted a video on youtube of Cathal covering this song. He played a series of gigs in Ireland last year and covered this song at each one, remembering Grant as a good friend and a treasured artist. Beautiful song and a fantastic version.

Hey, thanks so much for posting that. It's a really nice version. Few people could pull this off like Cathal. It's also great to hear one musician who I'm obsessed with cover a song by another musician who I'm obsessed with.

He's a classic singer man. very, very underrated. He's much more interesting than say Scott Walker is now (IMHO)

Agreed - Scott Walker's current stuff is just melodramatic artsy-fartsy drivel, IMHO. He'd do some great horror soundtracks, though. Cathal, on the other hand, is making some of the most challenging, yet still musically rewarding records of his career. I honestly don't understand why he doesn't get a little more attention/recognition.

My take is that Cathal will end up writing musical theater. "Foburg" is just about there.

So, what's a good starting point for recent Cathal Coughlan stuff?

Bear in mind that I once bought a Fatmia Mansions album, and didn't like it at all: far too loud and shouty.

However - if he does music in another style, I'll give him another go. What's the recent stuff like?

Duncan, ALL of his solo stuff.

Jeff I think Ctahal struggles really beacause he is Cathal. His perrsonality goes before him. He had some good and bad press with the FM's. If Microdisney had receoved much weightier press profile and mainstream success, then... He also dissappeared, and thanks to grunge and Britcock, there wasn't much room for anyone else in terms of advertising space, and he along with manuy others, like Dave Couse (A House) etc just dissappeared. The new kids ain't interested, its too much for them to look back a year at what Klaxons are doing let alone what Cathal are doing.

Thank God we can still buy and see Cathal though.

Duncan, start with "The Sky's Awful Blue." It's a stylish magnificent album. Follow quickly with "Black River Falls." There will be no noisy Fatima Mansions issues.

If you have a thing for Kurt Weill, start with "Foburg." But otherwise leave this for last because it is the most edgy and, well, it probably gets a too little loud and shouty for your taste.

Spence, you best of all know how little room there is for anybody on the pop merry-go-round.

His debut album - a hard to come by record called Grand Necropolitan - also contains many gems including one called 'Unbroken Ones' - easily one of the most beautfiful songs he's ever written.

Mosstin - I agree, Grand Necropolitan is as awesome as any of Cathal's solo records. Sadly, it's horrendously difficult to find, and I only have the low quality, grainy mp3 download that Cathal used to have available for free on his website. I've never seen this one for sale *anywhere*, on-line or in shops.
