Hi. I have a nagging question for all. I have an 30GB ipod that is plugged into my car stereo. How do you guys organize your ipod in order to listen to music? I usually go by Artist when selecting music to play. The problem is with so many songs on it and with adding a number of compilations (either mixes made or purchased) I have to scroll through 100s of artists. Pretty frustrating especially at a stop light. Do you often use playlists to make mixes of fresh music to listen to? I tend to use playlists to make a mix the way I use to make mixed tapes. I put a lot of effort into them so they sound good throughout instead of creating a quick mish-mash.

Anyways, just curious as to how others utilize their ipod to sort, search, and play music on the go.

I usually sort by album, Matthias, because it eliminates a step in the search process. When you search by artist, you still have to select among the albums you have by that artist. If I'm on a roadtrip, sometime I'll make playlists of albums I want to listen to - you know, a single playlist with, like, five or six albums in succession. Work pretty well, and it eliminates fumbling with the iPod while driving.

Maybe someday I'll finally get around to getting a new stereo in the car and will be able to hook up the iPod.

I remain a fan of the shuffle mode, even if I doubt its randomness. I have a 60gig unit but still have only put about 22gigs into it due to laziness. I like the surprises that come from the shuffle mode, going from a Go Betweens live performance to Buck Owens to Mina to Ashtray Boy to Brenda Holloway to Toots and the Maytals to Glen Ingram to Helen Shapiro. It's like a better version of the 1960s' Top 40 radio, where you get a wildly diverse program. Sometimes you go "damn! I'm not in the mood for that!" to "wow, I forgot all about this!" The only real pisser is the fluctuating levels. I suspect the fluctuating levels will make shuffle impossible in a car.

I have a friend who uses his iPod in the car. Riding with him can be a little spooky because I'm one of the few music lovers that he knows and he is constantly fiddling with the damn thing to play something to me. I keep expecting to die in a firey crash.

I have an iPod in the car and it works fine but not quite as easy to select etc, but in the car random is for me if you don't like a song you can skip to the next.
As far as random goes you can select how random you want it.there is some icon on the itunes.
